My younger brother is a junior in college and is deciding which 6 month co op he should take to get him further in his career. He has offers from Lockheed in Texas, Urban Outfitters (technically their parent company) at their home office (South Philly), and eMoney (fully remote). He likes all locations equally and the pay is roughly the same at all of them. He’s wondering which co op he should take to get further in his career. He also values a fun company culture which he thinks he’ll get at urban. Would any of these companies bring him a lot further in his career and does anyone have experience doing co ops at any of them? Also, is there a big chance some of them cut off their interns/co ops if the economy goes down the gutter? Thanks. TC: $184 K (left Epic, at Google now) Update: he doesn’t really wanna go down defense route and would rather go for big tech, but isn’t super opposed to it either. Also adding a poll.
Only go Lockheed if he wants to stay in the defense industry. Their tech is gonna be years behind other companies and will have a very boomer corporate culture.
You can always move to tech after doing defense. You'll be surprised at how many ex-defense people are in tech. The "non-secret" stuff is years behind, not the stuff that needs a security clearance lol But oddly enough, I kind of like the boomer corporate culture. Being the most tech savvy person of the bunch can yield big rewards and promotions. Lockheed has started hiring more younger people, all the young people form their own group and hang out a lot. My vote is for Lockheed!
Thanks for the reply. Not looking to stay in defense, wondering how much Lockheed would help with big tech really
I work with the Urban people. They seem pretty cool. If he wants to go the military contractor route Lockheed is the way to go. They better not stiff interns.
He doesn’t want to go military route but isn’t sure if urban is a big enough name for it to be worth it. Like will FAANG and other big tech companies even care about Urban Outfitters experience
Urban one seems nice, but the location is not lol. Philly is awful for parking
Thanks, and they provide a shuttle lol
A lot of FAANGs hire people from Lockheed. If he wants fully remote work, then eMoney. But career wise, I think Lockheed will set him up for success. He just needs to do a few years there before going into tech. (Coming from someone who worked at two FAANGs and have a lot of teammates from Lockheed)
Awesome. This would be for a 6 month co op so he would try for something else after another semester of school
Yo Custard got a referral? 4 yoe in may
I would go with a company that is more reputable and known for the resuma. But honestly, this opportunity is only going to impact his first and second job. I would go with a company he would have a great experience at.
Lockheed Martin may be best given the economic climate, government-adjacent jobs tend to weather recessions better
Thanks, he doesn’t necessarily want to stay in gov jobs but as a hopping in point this could be good while the economy isn’t great
Yeah and Lockheed is very well known, more so than the other companies I think. I know someone that hopped from Lockheed to Apple so there’s definitely upward mobility potential
