RANT!! I am in non-tech and I am at director level at DoorDash. I recently had a senior director opportunity (reporting to CXO) at a public HCM company ( Paylocity, paychex, Paycom, Paycor). The role was very compelling it was a leadership role. At DD - the director role is a middle manager role. T The pay at this new role was less than DD. Because of stock appreciation at DD I will be making almost $400K this year ( $260K base + $93K stocks.. but stocks have gone up). This new offer was less than this and they refused to go up even though they kept saying that they loved my candidacy and see a huge growth potential for me. The offer was $230K base, 50K stocks per year and 20% bonus. So even if I get the full bonus it will not add up to the stock upside I am seeing at DD and I tried negotiating the base and they said no. I have a good equity at DD, decent team, manager and WLB. But hate the business ( marketplace) and hate that my org is treated more like a support function. But after a lot of thought rejected the offer. Now I regret my decision big time. I feel like for a small financial upside I missed a good leadership opportunity and everyday at work even the slightest discomfort makes me regret my decision more!! I also do not want to be in marketplace business and want to move to B2B SaaS and in roles like mine they usually look for people from industry (B2B SaaS) and that makes me feel like the more time I spend at DD the more I will be unhirable and less wanted by b2b SaaS companies Was I too shortsighted? Did I screw up? TC: $351K ( $400K with stock upside)
You done did you sure did. Could’ve leveraged up to the C-suite or VP level with other job experience
If you recently turned down the offer, try talking to the HR and say I changed my mind . .if the position is still open .
Sadly this is why TC above all doesn’t scale. It’s give and take. Take a $30K hit, up level experience and use that springboard to grow (if one is inclined to). I don’t think it’s all over OP, just reach back out to them to see if they’re still open to having a conversation. Even if that role is closed, there may be others in the future.
Ya dun goofed my friend
We all have regrets. The best thing you can do is not to dwell on it and move on.
Eh, DoorDash director holds more prestige that HCM Senior Director (unless it’s ADP). No one knows about your day to day but you, I would recommend you start applying to FAANG level companies by the end of the year for Director. They will surely pay you even more than your stock appreciated comp at DD
Director at DD would likely get downleveled at FAANG. In non-tech at G I typically see outside hires that went Director (old job) --> Group Manager, VP --> L8 Director, CXO --> VP, including folks coming from Fortune 500/household brands.
idk what yall are talking about. Those companies are boomer companies, you need to get senior director at a zoomer company, that way you can get vp at a boomer company you shoot your load too soon, and u wont get vp
You are making 400k at director level at DD?? That’s too low. At workday directors make around 600k. A M3 manager makes around 450k. M3 are direct IC managers. Directors are M5.
What's your YOE?
