Kids (in US) that already have/come from generational wealth and are from VIP (sometimes even royal/political) families whose parents even bankroll their rent, etc. Why are you working as software engineers at low WLB companies like Meta, Amazon, etc. even as new grads from what I’ve seen? Are you just greedy? Do you hate your families and want to be independent? Ego? No friends/hobbies? Why don’t you choose a company/profession that is more chill for WLB, etc? Or if you’re passionate, why not something good for society, or a startup that you either found or join? I have noticed this on LinkedIn, in college, coworkers, etc. I, for one, am middle class, so I HAVE to grind in these high stress high pay jobs… But I’d love to have more time for friends, exercise, skiing, playing golf, an instrument, reading, art, etc. Or even found a company? I can’t help but wonder what these other kids are doing here?? But they’re usually “out of place” in the workplace and stand out in the crowd because they’re obviously “different”. Honestly, I kind of judge them. I don’t mind rich kids that are doing whatever they want or partying in their 20s taking it slow and probably making it up their 30s, that’s honestly pretty normal given their circumstances and trust fund/inheritance and they look healthy. Hell I wish that were me but I ain’t rich like that tho..
Even from a Rich kid perspective, if you want to make your own in tech, you will have to grind? If not building the fundamental skills, how would you build a successful company
I work hard because I don’t want to be dependent on my family. There’s no such thing as free money: it always comes with strings attached. I’m able to keep out of family drama because I’m able to make a living in tech. My brother is subject to my insane parent’s will because they don’t have financial independence. Not sure how this will affect my inheritance. I was told I would get 5MM, but I don’t as to count my chickens.
This is low key hilarious. I don't disagree with you, but a lot of other people will. Rich kids get a leg up in everything, they can handle a little flak.
Upper-middle class kid here. Dad is a solid-state physicist and director of research at a R&D corporation with 300+ patents (# patents assigned to the company, not to him as an individual). Mom is a community college professor. Parents’ combined TC is 825k. I’m on a work visa so can’t do much. Also, I like SWE. I haven’t considered founding a company because I don’t really have a product idea. Edit: I should clarify that my parents’ combined TC NOW is 825k. When I was in 12th grade, it was a little less than 160k. So I’m considered an adult with upper-middle class parents, but I certainly didn’t have a “rich kid upbringing.”
I like being among the plebs to see how they suffer. I love my manager dominating me and threatening me with pip when he thinks I depend on that salary he sees in my PCS.
Why do you think that those rich kids are stressed? They have that mental peace even if they get fired, they can be peaceful due to parents covering their rent or mortgage. SWE is respectful job with good pay. Not everyone is as stressful as us because we lose everything if we lose the job, it isn't the same on the other side.
Most of the kids from rich families that I know would join startups As leaders. Those ended up in Faang either don't have any entrepreneur spirit or they just cannot handle startup jobs and want to retire in Faang.
Thats the difference... They do what they want and like. You do to survive
Seems judgmental? Let people do what they want and mind your own business?
It’s a question, why are you here?
