I am working in almost exclusively Ruby on Rails. Should I be worried about this limiting my ability to find jobs in the future? Is the stack outdated?###
Like every other tech - yes and no. I mean GitHub still runs on it
It didn’t gain the widespread adoption backers were expecting
Let’s burry it 6ft under along with Adobe ColdFusion, Java Spring with XMLs and Python’s Pyramid
So what’s the Rails replacement? What do people do these days when they want to write their own web app?
I’ve seen a lot of node recently
NextJS/React with NodeJS, Typescript, Prisma, Tailwind, tRPC
Short answer: No it's not, you're fine Long answer: Outdated, no. Stable, yes. Still used by a ton of places, still used by new startups looking to build quickly. Still used by Github and Shopify. Rails is stable. It's still getting better. There are jobs. I've made a career out of working primarily with it. Flexport on Rails? (are you hiring?) Are you looking for a new job? We're hiring.
Sure, there are a lot of existing software out there that need to be maintained, so jobs still exist. Your point about new projects though is dubious. Why would I start anything new with Rails instead of the stuff mentioned in the post above? There’s a booming JS ecosystem that’s larger than the Rails community.
I might hit you up soon. Flexport is laying off 30% lmao
