Chicago reporting in to share some observations/opinions: - I would never want to live in NOLA - having been to SF, my only interest in that town is the hiking - Chicago really is just missing good nature; best mountains are a good 8 hour drive from here - I love the way that public perception of our city makes it so affordable, and yet we still have some of the best restaurants in the country, and all the arts I could ever ask for - the lake is beautiful - the tourists suck, but you can avoid them if you avoid downtown - the only violence I’ve ever experienced first-hand was a drunk + middle-aged woman who appeared to be on vacation thought that she could entitle herself to my personal space and get handsy with me while I was getting my bike ready to ride back from DT(again; tourists can kick rocks) - also, while we have bike lanes, the drivers here are incredibly unpredictable and can’t be trusted to respect the bike lanes
Lol regarding your last point, is there anywhere in the US that’s not the case? Wish I lived there
Yeah when the bike lane is divided it's fine.
I've lived in Chicago my whole life and the right wing media makes it seem like we're literally dodging bullets everyday. I'll admit it's not all roses especially in some areas. But, it will take a lot to convince me to move me and my family anywhere else. There are not many places in the US that can match Chicago's museums, restaurants, parks, universities etc.
https://heyjackass.com/ Let's visit Englewood, Austin, and Garfield Park.
I lived in Chicago for two years. It is not safe. City has a lot to offer but if your personal safety is at risk, it doesn't matter. Moreover, the city, county and state are bankrupt, so public services are abysmal. I remember that my apartments elevator would break down every week and was past its safety inspection. I placed calls with the relevant department to come and inspect it. Nothing happened. Then, the elevator caught fire. Luckily, no one lost life but it was scary. I had similar experience with cops, as they will not come until after the crime has already happened.
Why are companies forcing their employees to rto(meta, Amazon…) . Their finance teams mad bade investment into commercial real estate and trying to cover their asses with rto. Maybe their finance teams and cto needs to be piped.
As a Chicagoan, this is how effective propaganda is. I love New Orleans, but the comparison is laughable. You can’t convince me that this shift in perception is more rooted in reality than it is in conservative media being obsessed with Chicago after Obama was elected. That’s not to discount our crime issue as a large city, but the fact that people are terrified of even the nice neighborhoods is sad. Lots of misinformed rubes who are missing out because they believe in boogeymen.
LOL I love this. The crime is a right wing construct and a figment of imagination because Obama once lived in Chicago. You made my day. 🙂
It was native chicagoans that came up with “chiraq”. If your city has a well-known nickname based on crime you have an issue.
Seattle isn’t that bad lmao, but la in my experience is much worse than perceived. At least when I was there found super aggressive drivers and also a drive by shooting
Well, the stats back up what you say as the July 2023 poll for Seattle puts it as a safer place than DC, LA, etc. But Seattle must be extremely safe to live in 2006 and has gotten a lot worse. Will this decline flatten as it did for Detroit?
Seattle downtown area has become shit. Random shootings, homeless crazies, and open drug use. The cops have been instructed to not arrest druggies, which has made the situation even worse. Meanwhile, Washington now leads the nation in gas prices. Seattle will be the next SF
Why is it only the big cities with places most people shouldn’t go get the spotlight when almost every town has its own iteration of those areas? Like, violence is everywhere. Do y’all understand how fucking HUGE LA is? The sprawl is incredible. Chicago has its own sprawl, but we built more upwards(smaller shoreline 😝). I grew up in Kansas City, and it had it’s rough parts. My family is from north dakota; it has its rough parts. Like… small towns have their own shit to deal with, too.
It's true that all cities have their violent areas and they could have changed between 2006 and now. Those areas shift for a variety of reasons, but from my experience, it's been a mix of mass arrests, gentrification, increase / reduction of resources or things to do, and mass moving out / in. Large cities maybe have crime that occurs more often, or multiple times a day, but there's also a lot more people.
To be fair isnt the point of the poll to judge perception based on misinformed positions ie given you dont live there or personally visit what is your perception
I wonder if anyone read the whole Gallup article and how it said the list is based on bias. https://news.gallup.com/poll/509801/americans-rate-dallas-boston-safest-cities.aspx
SF could be worse on thefts and robberies but not that bad on murders
Lol
"but did you die???"
there's got to be some real estate money to be made by comparing where people "feel" and where they are safe.
This was such a powerful real estate hack that many schemes to exploit it (ie. Redlining) had to be legislated at the federal level
It doesn’t matter what people think, DC and Detroit are not safer than SF. That doesn’t mean that things haven’t gotten worse in SF but in terms of murder and violent crimes, it’s still lower than these two for sure.
Getting my car window smashed 5 times in 2 years is not a “violent crime”, but it doesn’t make me feel safe either. Neither does the smell of human excrement and piss on every corner. I grew up in a city with a supposed opioid epidemic, but I’ve never seen more needles in the open than I have in SF. It’s truly a shithole unless you are incredibly wealthy, sheltered and keep to the expensive shop areas. Junkies outnumber high school students by 50% and it really shows. https://mountainside.com/blog/opioids/drug-users-outnumber-high-school-students/
Having spent time in both SF and Detroit in the past year; I felt safer in Detroit. Not once was I concerned that a person might throw their poop at me. Not once did I see multiple people high + dancing in the street.
