Recently rented Airbnb/Vrbo in Hawaii and the Host charged us a standard cleaning fees. Post hosting us, he texted us the following things: 1. Please make sure you clean the apartment. 2. Do wash all the dishes/utensils used 3. Wash and dry all the napkins, towels, beddings. 4. Throw the trash and recycle outside in the community trash bin. Just venting but some of the things are getting ridiculous. Any Airbnb/Vrbo host on blind that can give reasoning? #travel #vacation #pto #airbnb #vrbo
Stopped using AirBnB from 2019. Hotels are way more convenient
Yes, my last 2 experiences have thought me that it’s better to stay at a hotel rather than Airbnbs.
What's the point of a vacation if you have to do the above mentioned things..
Exactly!! My wife and I were debating about the same topic.
I’m just wondering if there’s a decent alternative of Airbnb? After hearing all about the horrifying stories on that platform …
Do you mean for peer to peer? I believe Vrbo is a good competitor and then there are smaller ones. Airbnb is the biggest one so far.
Booking.com for hotels. Sometimes I find apartments there without cleaning fees and stupid requirements.
That’s a good idea. I thought bookings.com is more like a hotel finder travel site.
From best I can tell, it's a way to boost profits.... Similar to the old school days where items on ebay sold for cheap with outrageous shipping fees. Some properties will list low rate per night and make up that money in high cleaning fees. But the current trend seems to be the cleaning fees are bogus and people think the guest is going to do it lol
Yup, exactly. You make some good arguments here: 1. Airbnb does not show additional cleaning fees and other fees until you are at the checkout page and hosts take advantage of it. This sucks big time for the users. I know Airbnb has acknowledged it publicly and are planning to change. 2. At this point you(host) are straight up being greedy. This is something that I personally dislike and make me not want to use the platform.
There's still good hosts, just like eBay has/had good honest sellers. I'd seek out the good ones punish the bad ones, rather then the platform. I will say the one thing that turns me off of Airbnb is the cleaning fee for short stays. However I can't think of a way around it because the property still going to get cleaned if I stay 1 day or 1 week/month whatever. I forgot the country think it was AUS or maybe an EU one, but if you use that for the home page search and convert to USD it'll show you the total cost
Requiring the guest to do that kind of cleaning should be specified before booking. If the host doesn't, it should be justification for a mid or bad review. But the dark secret of Airbnb is that, after staying in a person's house, it's awkward to leave a critical review, so the review averages display extreme positive bias compared to hotel reviews. OP, if you feel comfortable doing so, please push back or write this in a review. But also please check that you did RTFM and see if this was specified anywhere before booking.
That is so true, the host/place was one of the Gem finds. Leaving a bad review right now is just awkward and I believe most of the people staying there might have felt the same. Will double check the description before writing a bad review.
We have become a sad bargaining country for absolutely everything. Go there, enjoy your vacation, and don't clean shit. Give them automatically a bad review. If they give you one too, tough shit, you are thinking about leaving the platform anyway which is the wise move
Unfortunately my wife won the argument and we did clean the place 😝. Just pissed by the requirements from the host.
Soon they’re gonna want you to make the first dinner for the next guests.
@Snowflake, mind referring?
Leave a review that calls them out for it. Airbnb hosts are asking too much these days
For sure and Yess! Glad to know that I am not the only person.
