Work/life balance in NYC?

What's your experience with work/life balance? I'm sure it can vary between and within companies, but I'd like to get a better idea of how many hours people work and what the culture is like. I've always wanted to live in New York but I figure there is no point if I spend all my time working like the stereotypes go

I noticed that in the Bay the culture is more relaxed. I worked in NYC and noticed that everyone was at their desk at 8.30am and left at 6pm. Also, the attire is more formal, people generally wear suits or business casual, unlike in the Bay where everyone wears jeans to work. But I feel this difference is not because of Bay vs NYC but because of tech (Bay) vs finance/insurance/healthcare (NYC). In general, tech companies allow a more relaxed culture as compared to other industries. Also, most people are very active after work in NYC, they hang out, eat out, work out, learn new skills etc. In the Bay everyone is just lazy and wants to date.

Depends on the company, team, project, deadline and you... Having said that, there's a reason why it's the city that never sleeps

What about your personal experience?

I worked at a startup in NYC, had no life. 9:30-7 usually. But the city is amazing and can't live anywhere else

I moved out of NYC because I had 0 work life balance and burnt out regularly. It wasn’t just my job either, this was across multiple jobs over a few years. I loved living there, but I could never live there again.

It varies team by team. My team pretty relax. Do the work, let ppl know you come in late or take an hour or two off or off the day. Adult.

Depends on the industry. Wlb at Spotify is good to the extent that it can be even annoying depending on team. Feels some people barely work.

Google NYC seems very relaxed in general, and I personally am quite happy with my WLB on my team. Make your own hours, work from home when you need to, etc. No work (including email) on weekends.

I am surprised you specifically mentioned no work on weekends. Is that not a norm?

In other NYC industries like banking or law working weekends seems pretty common, so when I think "good work/life balance" that fact comes to mind.

It is what you make of it. What I see is that most people arrive around 10am and the office looks pretty empty around 5:30pm lots of stuff to do before and after work. Running, cycling, bars or just hangout in the park. It depends on what you like to do.

Really depends on type of company. Most large tech and well-funded startups seem to be 10-6. Tech in finance firms seem to be strict 9-6. I’m generally 10-6.

At NYC-based companies, there is much more of an expectation to work long hours. I kept getting burnt out having to constantly work 60 hour weeks. Amazon has strangely been the best WLB I've ever had. I work 40 hours most weeks with no problem taking breaks.
