Be nice to H1B people
Dear all, is it worth doing MBA in this age and sifting completely into different roles like product managers/marketing/ investment banking etc. and restarting from zero again. Will my age put some restrictions during hiring? Many thanks in advance.
You would probably be a better fit for an executive MBA. Age likely wouldn't matter. Whether it makes sense really depends on your goals, is your goal more money? a different career path? What's driving the change?
Interested moving out of s/w development. It’s hard to compete with youngsters the way tech industry is going in(even I m good sw eng). So only PM is very close fit but company won’t hire without MBA.
Bad idea. 1st thing mba will tell u is use your experience and don’t change career. You can change only one if 3 things- location, industry, career field. Try doing some focused courses and move up the ladder.
How about moving into AI or ML ? Better than MBA ..there are tons of product and marketing managers available in the market ..i am not sure about investment banking ..they hire from top schools and also working hours in IB sucks ..I hear easily they put 80-90 hrs a week ..very stressful..during 2009 CFAs where making 25$/hr ..
Even, I don’t want to go into IB. Interested only in PMs roles
If you're SDE wanting to get into Investment Banks, then you can consider ED roles in Technology departments there. For IBD/ST/ER, they need Analysts and Associates who can work long hours and do the ground work and that may not fit your experience level. Plus doing financial modeling is a completely different skill set. MDs are usually internally promoted because they're familiar with the deal flows and clients. An alternative would be manager/partner who covers tech sector in management consulting, so you can leverage your expertise in tech. There are partners in MBBs transitioned from other industries because they have the domain knowledge in those industries.
Full time M7 MBAs are extremely ageist. They are looking for ambitious, young kids in their mid-late 20s usually from MBB consulting or FANG. Sorry, but you have no chance at 40 to get into these full time programs, which are usually the only way to switch to a high paying PE/IB/MBB position. To top it off, GS or MBB would balk at hiring a 40 yr old entry level person. You could do a part time MBA, but even from Haas I see very few successful total career switches. Maybe it would help for a SWE to PM switch though.
You dont want entry level MBB or ibanking in your 40s. Those are for exploiting the young blindly ambitious ones...do you want to work 70hours in NYC or travel every week for next 3-5 years post MBA? ...better to leverage what you have and just invest in those industries to tap into industry gains... GS and BX arent going to do so well as rates go up anyway.... Tech is all US has got right now.
What’s GS and BX ?
MBA here. I suggest you read the book ‘The 10 Day MBA’. Next, if you’re into Prod Mgmt, build your own product/service or help a Startup launch theirs if you want to do the marketing on your spare time you would’ve spent in a PT MBA program. The experience of such should either land you a Prod Manager gig, marketing gig, or the product takes off and that’s your new Full time gig.
Thank you but even you will not hire me just based on my reading of ‘The 10 day MBA’
I know people in IB and it can get very stressful. The hours are pretty crazy. Prod mgmt/mktg would IMHO be a better choice. You don’t necessarily need to have a MBA to pivot to those roles. Exec. MBA will be useful if you are already in an exec role and want to progress further. Why do you want to pivot? Do you like any of the roles you mentioned or are you tired of sw dev?

Then see if ur employer can sponsor ur MBA. When you say company won’t hire, you mean other companies or your company ? How about internal transfer to pm?
