I’m a manager who recently had my direct manager changed, from director X to director Y. The change happened at the end of the annual performance review so my old manager still filled it in before the switch. They on one hand gave me a positive rating and I got a nice pay raise right after. On the other hand, they absolutely SLAYED me in the review section of “Things for improvement”: Writing brutal things about my management style. Mentioning things like attrition in my team being too high, situations where they claim I was egocentric with peers, etc. (without providing actual context and pointing all the blame on me) Now I’m not sure what my new manager (director Y) thinks of me, given that they barely know me, but still saw this brutal feedback from my previous manager (director X), while me still being under positive rating and getting a pay raise. I’m confused TBH. TC: $200K

Unless you think your company or teams are toxic( always possible), likely there is truth in the feedback. Getting negative feedback is hard, it is natural to feel hurt and defensive, however real growth and an improved life can come from facing it
It’s a balanced mix of both I think. Yes there’s toxicity like most places these days, but of course I’m not perfect and had my fair share of mistakes during this hectic year across the industry.
This is done so you do not Ask for next promotion that fast
Bruhhh… spot on… I was nagging them about a promo in the next cycle for quite a while.
Now you now how ICs feel when they get conflicting responses/actions from management. TC 500k
I’ve been an IC before, I know the struggle. It’s kind of the same on the management track, you’re just much closer to decision making and politics.
How much is the pay raise?
5%
5% is fine to call out some improvements. If the 5% is on a high base like $250-$300 then it is something. If it is on a sub 200K base then it is not much and management can give that hike and call out a ton of improvements. I guess in this economy keeping the job and getting 5% is an achievement. So congrats..
