Hey! Traveling to India for a month and have a few questions. 1. With the Indian international credit card ban can i still use my credit cards in India? Chase sapphire reserve and capital one venture. I hear they may not work. 2. If not, how do i get a credit card to use there? Revolut is not available for US citizens. 3. What's the best way to get access to cash without paying bullshit currency exchange fees? 4. UPI looks really cool. Can i use it? Downloaded phonepe but don't have an Indian bank account ๐ฅฒ
Most places in big cities now takes credit card( except Amex). But yes will still need some cash.
Schwab debit card. Fee reimbursed ATM withdrawals worldwide.
Csr works for me. Do keep cash for small restaurants and emergencies.
Be vaccinated before you go. India isn't exactly as clean as what you see in the movies.
Some cards work, some just donโt. Sometimes a card works at one place but not another. The plus side is that things are generally so cheap in India that you can get by with cash. My recommendation - carry cash and multiple cards. CSR generally works well.
I think you can use upi : https://sbnri.com/blog/nri-bank-accounts/nris-and-foreigners-can-use-upi-in-india
Bring me a laptop and Iโll let you use my cc.
Amex and csr works fine. Exchange rate is what you see on Google.
I went to India last year. Credit card acceptance was OK, particularly in malls. Sometimes they don't work at all and I had to resort to cash. I definitely needed to use cash a couple of times. I withdrew cash from ATMs with Schwab debit card and didn't have any problems. I considered UPI but decided against it because you can't withdraw any unused funds, and I don't think you can make P2P payments to a friend or coworker, only merchants. If you're staying there for a long time (over a month) maybe worth considering UPI. Contactless payments or Apple/Google Pay almost never works, you basically have to use chip or swipe. Despite Discover supposedly being partnered with RuPay which should have wide acceptance, it also never worked for me. Most places that take credit cards take Visa and Mastercard.

CSR works for me. You still might need cash at a few places.
