What are things like at Affirm post-IPO? How does WLB/pace, tech, and quality of coworkers (on average) compare to other tech companies? I am looking at a few SDE2 listings and was hoping to get some insight into the company and the process. #jobsearch #affirm
Did you get a call?
Haven’t applied yet, am hoping to get a referral.
WLB is decent, during peak season and quarter end there can be longer weeks. Culture is great, people are overall nice to work with. I would say we hire lots of great talent here. We're remote first so that's nice too if you don't want to commute but we have offices too. I would recommend overall.
+1 Also would like to mention world class benefits. affirm.benefits.com
Regarding the remote work - I noticed you all post jobs for literally every city in the US on linkedin. I assume you don't actually have 100+ office locations right? My guess was that this was to attract talent from all over the country. Also, thanks for the thoughtful reply, seems like people are pretty happy with the talent level there which says a lot.
I joined a little over a year ago as an SDE2 and so far it’s been great. Technically, I’ve learned and grown quite a bit. The vision for where the company is going is also pretty clear which I appreciate. Everyone is hyper-focused on that, and anyone is free to question how projects that are being proposed aligns with that vision and our quarterly goals to become profitable. Some of the All-Hands questions can get pretty spicy. Like one commenter said, it gets busy in the weeks leading up to Black Friday and the Holidays. There’s a lot of “code freeze” around big sales events with our merchant partners which can get very annoying as an engineer as it sometimes breaks momentum. Our testing frameworks aren’t the best I’ve worked with as they can be very buggy with slow build times, but there is a team dedicated towards improving it every sprint and I personally appreciate all their updates so far as well as the way they take and implement feedback. Stock is fairly volatile though, it stabilizes for a bit and then fluctuates a lot especially during end of the year. But otherwise WLB is great overall. The talent is superb in all the teams that I’ve had the chance to work with. People who are slacking and underperforming are put on PIP pretty quickly, so tbh I have not worked with anyone who I can tell was just coasting and doing the bare minimum. Managers push you to think deeply about how the business and finance industry operates and how that translates to all the technical trade-offs you have to make while developing. Benefits are also good apart from no 401k match but imo, I like that I’m not being micromanaged and I can take as many sick days and time off as I want, so long as the job gets done and deadlines are met.
This sounds amazing! I am in a similar position looking to join on as an SDE2. Coming from a Finance background I've found it difficult working on a team that pays no mind to the financial situation of our projects so being encouraged to think about how projects align with financial goal swould be very refreshing. Mind if I send you a message to learn more?
Sure thing!
