One of the best articles I’ve read on NYT, the author is so knowledgeable to present the issues of US navy and politic. World has changed. Traditional destroyers and aircraft carriers may need to retire soon. Unmanned vehicles equipped with sophisticated cameras are the future of the navy. US have so many great tech startups, but they rather contract with Boeing. It’s really a waste of fortune. tc 210k https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/04/us/politics/us-navy-ships.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
Tech startups are just a Wall Street casino. Microsoft is pretty much the only large, real tech company that does useful things.
The author is naive, he doesn’t know how real world works
Very true. Concepts like the Arsenal Ship have been around for decades but keep getting shot down because Navy officers want to be in command of "real" ships not floating missile platforms. Apparently the Koreans are now looking into the idea....who knows...US military procurement is probably even more corrupt and inefficient than most government activities
Deep down, the top brass don't believe the US will get involved in a near-peer war in the next 20 years. So they keep doing what they know best and stroking their egos. Unmanned vehicles and cyber warfare has always been the endgame in warfare, but the skills the current brass have do not translate into that arena so they bury their heads in the sand.
So it’s not bad for US to be knocked out by ccp army in South China Sea. But US may lose thousands of soldiers. The price is too high
