Am I racist if I don’t want to marry a Southeast Asian?
I want to take a 5 year break from the industry. Do you think I might still get a job once I am back? I am thinking of studying for interviews after 4 years, 9 months, and interviewing. I am planning to start my break once Etsy does another round of layoffs because I want to get some severance after dealing with inhumane treatment at work. HMs: Would you hire someone who had a 5-year break?
5 years? I'm resigning at the end of next month to do a 1 year sabbatical. I thought that was a good amount of time, never thought to do 5. How's Etsy though?
After 5 years loafing around the house in your pj’s your skills are obsolete so no.
If you have an excuse like being a parent or startup story sure
Which skills will be relevant still in 5 years? Can you plan to get some certs or advance your skills in some way? Think of a parent who drops out for the 5 years before their child starts kindergarten. They often face significant barriers to reentry. The ones who do best are working on their skills, volunteering in their industry and keeping their resume relevant
It is very difficult to get back into a really tech role with a 5 year gap. I took a break from the corporate world and ran three technology businesses. As I moved back into corporate, everyone was afraid I had lost my "hard skills," and were not willing to even meet or test. Eventually, I got back in and proved myself, but I wsd lucky. Good luck!
Wow no space for even a founder ! That's crazy
I would not consider someone a competitive candidate if they haven’t worked in five years. Personally, I would hold it against them that the quit working for half a decade, it would make me feel like they don’t need this job either. I’d question how serious they were about wanting to start work again and what their work ethic would be like.
No
5 years is a long time. Depends on your current age too. A 29 year old after a 5 year break when they were 24 could probably break E4/L4 levels. They’ll still adapt quickly. A 45 year old has more experience, but a 5 year break at the age is much more suspect. I see plenty of people with 1-2 year gaps and no one cares.
Doubt it
