I survived 5 years. Two promotions (Financial analyst intern, Business Analyst, Product Manager, Product Manager 2). 6 managers. 3 teams. Teams: Amazon Prime Now Amazon Marketplace Alexa Shopping TC went from 76k to 205k in 5 years. Learned a ton. Launched really cool project. Amazon made me a super robust, data driven, high bar PM. I have come out of this experience as a different person. But I also have scars from the emotional trauma. AMA.
Who was the worst manager and why?
Worst manager was on Alexa. She set unrealistic deadlines, micromanaged the smallest things, expected things to launch on a weekly process, emotionally blackmailed and manipulated her employees to get work done.
Jesus sorry bro
How many pips did you see in your time? Do people get pipped unfairly or is it mostly because of low performance?
I have only seen 3 PIPs in my 5 years. A lot of it gets shoved under the rug. Suddenly youâll hear of a peer who just stopped working at amazon. Later to find out they were PIPed.
Did you ever feel like people were trying to push you out or did they give you insane goals?
Every team, every time. We had an unrealistic goal on one team that even the director knew wasnât feasible. We were red the whole year.
Average hours per week in each role?
Depends on the team. Average 50-60 hours. Nothing too crazy. Work hours really fluctuated. Some weeks I work 30 hours, others are 70 hours. It really depends on project status. That kind of volatility is exhausting though. Amazon has a lot of âfalse firesâ. Things are just on fire all the time.
I dont know how these 5 year oldies run AMA. I have been with amazon for 11 years, 4 countries, 4 promos, more than 15 managers and i still feel a lot of things are new in amazon or keep changing constantly.
Start your own AMA, let the kid live
Youâre free to share your experiences @chindichor! No one is holding you back. Iâd love to learn from your 11 years!
No I have been a part of 3 teams. Managers kept leaving.
Is Amazon Prime Video a toxic org to work in (if you know anything about the teams)? Iâd like to think that Twitter accounts of orgs are accurate reflections of their cultures (the tone and the kind of posts they make in social media), or at least it seems that way.
How did you make the switch from a BA to PM? A strong selling point or right place and time?
Best advice on how to manage up to your managers? Tips on surviving in general?
Is it as bad as blind portrays it to be
It really depends on the manager and org. Most of the teams Iâve been a part of had aggressive goals and expectations, but my managers shielded me from the toxicity.
However my most recent manager encouraged that type of behavior. A lot of aggressive amazon culture comes from top down, and weekly business reviews encourage that kind of aggressiveness. But I have had good managers who have protected me. Not so lucky in all my teams though.
