There is total truth to it. Especially given the current environment for more diversity. Being a white male at that age, you will be the first let go.

I’m still a new grad but I’m hearing conflicting stories. Is the industry ageist or is it desperate for senior-lead developers? He had years of experience at big companies but couldn’t find a job?
My observation is that this kind of thing happens when someone works in tech and is stuck being too "hands on." Middle age suits executives, people managers and delegators well enough, but it's harsh on people who are still individual contributors. The senior, lead, staff, principal engineers the industry is hot for tend to be very accomplished people between 28 and 35 or so. They're not typically looking for people 45+.
The problem is that the younger lot doesn't know what the older lot can bring. Learn from own mistakes then! 😐 Isn't hands-on managers and execs a thing now? 35 is the new 45.
