500K TC can’t afford housing in San Francisco
500K TC, recently single lady, but After Tax and 401K deduction, take home TC is probably less than $250K. A decent looking apartment in San Francisco is $2M at least and if renting is an option, a decent looking one bedroom apartment is at least $4K per month. How can people live pleasantly in SF? It’s a city of work not for enjoying life at all. Because with this TC, I can only live in an old ugly depressing apartment….still need to reserve fund for clothing, makeup, travel etc.

Welcome to California. There are two plays here. 1) live like crap, make your money, move somewhere nice at retirement/post career 2)move somewhere nice now, make less money in mcol/lcol, and live better 2nd option comes with less flexibility/growth and chance to hit it big, but at least you enjoy your early/mid life in comfort 1st means you live like shit for a while but are “in the game”

Also, if you can’t afford a mortgage with 250k take home, may be you should reassess your life’s priorities.

Rent 2000 (2 roommates, 3br/3ba in UES) CC bill 1500 max (all expenses for food, bars, buying anything online, subway, etc) Rest is saved If I took home 20,000 a month I would have a single apt in Chelsea and a fucking car 😂
