I would want to get a blind opinion on going on vacation/Loss of pay to prepare for FANGMULA E6/staff interviews. Say 4 weeks of preparation and 1 week of interviews. A little about me. 200+ LC and half way thru DDIA and Alex Xu book. I have close to 15 years of tech experience, on H1B visa and have been in Amazon for > 1 year. I think there's an interesting project that's coming my way that would help me in my L6 promo but with all the promo process and project delays, I am sure it's going to take one more year and I wouldn't want to wait for that long. My manager nor I have started on the promo doc yet. Unfortunately, I have been down-leveled during the interview process and at that time I didn't think that moving to L6 was such a difficult thing. I heard the hike isn't that significant after the L6 promo, so why work hard and not get paid for those efforts. Would like suggestions on whether it's a good idea to go on leave on short-notice and prepare. I am a bit confident that I would be able to crack an interview, but to think thru on what would happen if things don't work out and only thing left out is the job at Amazon? Want to weigh on the Pros and Cons of each. Would need some suggestions on good excuses to go on leave :) TC: 300K #tech #faang #facebook #amazon #google #engineering
Amazon's very badly regarded on Blind, but c'mon Amazon L6 == FB E5 at least, and as per my personal experience of the interview bar, it's between E5 and E6 (cracked E5 easily, got down-leveled to L5 at AWS, that L6 bar was insanely high).
I am ok with being Pipped at E6 in Facebook. For me the first thing is to prepare for E6 and give it a shot. BTW, Does Facebook also PIP 5 to 10% evry 6 months?
You sure you need 4 whole weeks to prep for a single interview? That's a big investment, do you have more interviews line up? I did multiple loops with FANG with just two days off, yes it's tough and tiring but I never see anyone take a whole month off just for interview...
I was in a similar position a couple of months ago and decided not to quit before lining up new job, after consultation with my friends and GF. Mostly they were afraid of the psychological pressure to get a job, when not having one. I told my manager though that I'm pretty set on leaving and that he shouldn't put me on important projects anymore. This somewhat helped to reduce distractions and stress but honestly in hindsight I think I should've just quit. I think I could have been prepared better and had more consistent interview results if I did. I ended up getting offers from 3 out of 5 companies I interviewed with (one of them I ghosted after phone screen) with not much prep but my interview performance and leveling was a bit over the place. The timing of these offers was also all over the place. Interestingly the one company which had the most easy interview I failed due to lack of any prep. Granted I ended up in a place where I like it (RH) but I could've arrived faster at my goal without distractions from my old job. Only thing it'd advice is to line up two more interesting companies as even with the best preparation there's a component of luck and you can't count on FB E6 alone.
Its the same psychological pressure of getting a job that my wife and I are concerned too. But I feel like 4 weeks of no distraction solidifies the prep and a higher chance of getting a couple of job offers. Yep, its best to apply to multiple companies and that's the plan. I plan to interview for 4 to 5 companies in the same week. I currently have the FB E6 loop scheduled but haven't heard from other companies I applied. BTW, how's robinhood? May I know the job location and the role you have joined and how do you like it so far? Can I dm you for more details?
Damn 15 YOE and still on H1B? :(
I have been in US for 6 years and haven't been in a Managerial position to get GreenCard on EB1 Category :( and I am from India. I would consider a win if I get EAD in the next 10 years :D
Just become a manager rather than E6 then
