Havent received numbers from FB yet, but was told I should expect an offer. Planning on making a decision this week as ive been holding Amazon back for 4 weeks now. AWS 450 TC - 185 base FB ? TC - guessing 200/600/100 = 480 Y1 and 415 Y2 with refreshers and 15% bonus (is that correct?) Uber 305 TC at current stock price. AWS team sounds super cool and met virtually with other senior engineers on the team who seem great. I will be building a lot of new features from the ground up. Picking up AWS skillset is great for whatever I do next. Comp is all cash Y1 At Uber I love my team and work but comp < FB/AWS and my split is all politics and backstabby. I may also be laid off in this round or any future round, so way less stable. FB looks better on resume, likely more comp long term, likely equally bad WLB as AWS but with better perks. Bootcamp is undefined. I have a couple friends spread throughout at FB, only 1 friend at Amazon (zero in AWS) Have a couple finance firms willing to do interviews and startups. But dont think im particularly interested unless its JS, Citadel or 2S, but they are not interested. Google asked me to wait another 6 weeks. Not interested in Cali or startup equity. Im looking for a place I can grow as an engineer in my technical skills (driver product in huge scale) but also move to management/people manager long term.
There is lots of headcount available right now. I would bet that there is a team that you would find interesting. I would say that at Facebook you would have a higher chance of upward mobility if you are motivated. Facebook has higher refreshers.
Thanks, this helps the decision. Definitely motivated to go Manager track. Not sure that I give enough shits about eventual consistency versus whatever else is hot today to make a great staff. Also higher than zero refreshers at Amazon.
@eyeball do you think Fb would slow down hiring eventually? With ad revenue slowing down, how would fb fund this aggressive hiring?
It's a no brainer. 99% people will take a Facebook offer over AWS any day. Congrats.
Only hesitation is two fold: 1. AWS skill set likely generalized better 2. Greed, Amazon told me that they know FB will beat and are willing to try and get VP approval if I’d be willing to promise to sign to beat them. And I don’t want to lie to them if I go down this path Thanks, very excited and feeling really grateful, especially with colleagues being laid off (a bit of guilt also)
There are two advantages of a generalizable skillset: 1. You'll get interview calls from many companies); 2. You'll be able to actually do the job once hired. 1 is more true for someone from FB than just someone with a generalized skillset. You'll get to interview anywhere easily if you work at FB. The offers you have tell me you're very smart. You'll be able up any skills you need easily anyway. Go to FB. Anything Amazon offers is a fixed ceiling for 4 years. You'll get more at FB over time especially with good performance. For example, there's way more opportunities to E6 at FB than for L7 at Amzn. Also, the pay at E6 is much higher than L7 at Amazon.
Also you should aim for 205/700/100 at FB. That's 515k the first year and about 450k starting year 2.
Will definitely try and negotiate, I can see what they say. But my interview wasn’t knock out of the park like my AWS one was.
All the best for your decision. You have two great choices and an enviable situation on hand. Make the most of it.
Wow L6 is now 450 !!! 2-3 years ago it was like 300k
Need to compete with FB/G?
YoE?
6 and change + masters
What's change+masters?
Yoe?
6 and change + masters
Path for amazon L6 => L7 is very, very long and hard. Path for fb L5 => L6 can be done in a couple of years with some focus and a decent manager
Don't believe this BS. Path to 6 is non trivial and a couple of years is unrealistic. More realistic is 3-4 years. Let's not kid around. There's a reason only 8-10% of ICs are E6
Thanks, I think I’d want to go down the management track either way.
You seem really smart but struggling on this very simple decision :)

What do you mean bootcamp is undefined? I am joining fb soon and recruiter told me bootcamp would be virtual.
Like I don’t know the team ahead of time, so could only find shitty teams or find an amazing team.
When are you planning to join? June or July?
