Capital One offer

I got laid off about a month ago and just received a few offers but am leaning towards accepting Capital One. I am based out of NYC and the offer is for $180k and $20k sign-on bonus (up to $18k yearly bonus going forward with a $9k target). It is a Senior software engineer position. I’m pretty happy with the TC but wondering if anyone has any suggestions on if I should negotiate or not. If so, salary, bonus, or in general and feel out where they’re flexible. Thanks in advance! YOE: 4.5

Tell them your other offers are better but you’d rather work for them

Until they ask for documents. Happened to me but i wasn't lying.

That’s a ridiculous thing for a company to ask for lol. ChatGTP, write me an offer letter for $200k from American Express 😂

I’m really surprised Capital One is offering that much

100% agree!

When I tried to negotiate salary they went with sign on bonus instead. Also they just announced RTO for their hybrid approach starting May 2nd, they expect 2-3 days in office. Not sure if that’s something you’d need to consider.

Thanks for the info! Yeah I spoke with the eng manager about RTO - seems like it’s pretty team specific from what he said

It is not team specific. The message came down from Rich himself.

You can ask for 185k base. The max they can offer!

Good to know, thanks! The recruiter mentioned to me that the sign on bonus can also go up to $30k for anyone else reading this (said this during our initial phone call)

180k is very high for 4.5 yrs exp. They won't budget in base salary but can increase the sign on if they have room

Fannie Mae RHCW81 Apr 16, 2023

They won't budge nor budget

Honestly I don’t think $180k is that high for NYC & SF. Definitely not complaining though, it is pretty good

Man, you must be really good if you already got a few offers after being laid off only about a month ago! How did you get interviews so fast in this environment and also complete them? And you didn't need any prep time? Well anyways congrats!!

Aw thanks! Yeah getting interviews was challenging compared to my past experiences. I just used LinkedIn to find them and applied directly. I’ve kept up interviewing through the years (both as an interviewer and interviewee) so it wasn’t too difficult to get back into it personally. Most challenging thing was honing in on answers to behavioral questions. I’ve found those to be more important than in previous interview processes since I was applying for senior positions this time.
