Amazon is Sh****t
YOE 0.5 from current job. Transitioning from electronics engineer to SWE. 2 FT offers with Boeing (in Socal) and another at a small Bay Area company (well refer as Company X) that is permanent WFH. Which should I pick and why? My end goal is to finish my MSCS in F2021 then grind LC. I would eventually like to work for a company like for Amazon/Disney/Google. Boeing: Space. TC 107 (base 92 and 15 bonus) for Real Time SWE II. 401k with 8% match. Company X: Telecom/IoT. TC 108 as Backend SWE. 401k no matching. Permanent WFH. My biggest concern is taking on a job which doesn’t help gain the necessary skills to be competitive for other startup/tech companies. I’m also worried about Boeing being too embedded focused which will set me back when applying to other tech companies that value developer skillsets and exposure to tools over embedded stuff. Lastly, I have heard tech companies (Amazon) have roles which need TS security clearance, if true then staying with Boring to preserve my clearance until I can find those opportunities might be ok.. unless there’s none in SoCal. Thoughts? #engineering #software #engineer #swe @boeing #boeing #embedded #boeing
Don’t go Boeing, in general. And in particular- SoCal? Space? I think I know what project you’d be on. If it requires a TS clearance, run...
Yes it requires a TS which I currently have. This is at Seal beach. Could you PM me specifically what you had in mind?
Going with Boeing will likely keep your TS, but it’s really less valuable then you think. Only go to Boeing if you really love that type of work. Otherwise other option will be better in long run. Source - Had a TS and worked on satellites.
I'm speaking for msft but it probably is applicable to Amazon as well. You may get a bonus but the work from having a clearance is utter ass. I know multiple people who haven't coded in 6+ months because of it.
More reason for me to leave cleared work.
"My biggest concern is taking on a job which doesn’t help gain the necessary skills to be competitive for other startup/tech companies." If you care about this don't choose Boeing. You may solve some very hard problems and work on some really cool things in that part of Boeing, however you will not be learning skills that are broadly useful in getting jobs in the larger tech industry.
I have no first-hand experience, but a friend worked for Boeing about a year and a half until mid 2020 before switching to another company. Main pain points were: - Projects are extremely disorganized - Significant amount of people coast by with the mentality of doing just enough to keep their job - Huge disconnect between engineering teams in India and US/EU - Mostly concerned that staying with the company will not get them anywhere in terms of a acquiring/improving their development skills - Company is stuck in their old ways and the most recent fails with its planes crashing and countless fails during the NASA project safety tests of their deliverables exposed a lot of flaws the company is facing culturally and in terms of engineering quality.
All valid points of concern across the board. It is with their space side so it may be different (for better or worse). It looks like the only downside to Company X is zero 401k matching which could be offset by a higher counter offer. But with my minimal experience I doubt I’m in the position to counter for with $120k. Edit: how difficult was it for them to leave Boeing? Was the new company tech/FAANG?
It was not difficult for them to get a new position. It took them about two months from decision to leave to sign a new job, but I think that depends mostly on how well you do in your interviews rather than where you are coming from. The new company is not FAANG, but it pays just as well. You don’t have to be working for FAANG to make a good TC ;) Also with 0.5 YOE I would recommend to be more focused on how much your job will help you to kick-start your career/ aligns with what you want to do. The money will come as you get more involved with your field of interest and gather more knowledge.
