I received form 1099-G from State of California Franchise Tax Board and the tax year mentioned 2022. Do people on H1B receive it? When I filed single I didn’t get it but after marriage I filed as jointly in 2022 and now I got this. Any idea? Thanks

Do you have an HSA? How much is in your HSA?
I got it as well. I think it's saying that some type of your state refund for the 2022 financial year is treated as taxable federal income for the 2023 year. If that's wrong, I hope someone else can explain it.
If you received tax refund you get this form. It’s considered income, your status is irrelevant. If you itemized federal return deductions in 2022, then the refund is taxable, if you used standard deduction, it’s not.
It’s only taxable if you itemize AND if the refund will bring you below the 10k limit for state tax deducted last year. Very few people in CA fall in this category esp in tech
perfect timing, i just emailed my cpa, will update if diff from the comments above
Sure. Thanks
Did you receive unemployment (in 2022 or 2023 or both)? That is the most common reason for the form
No, I never applied or received any unemployment benefits. I believe people of H1, H4 depends aren’t eligible for it right? Please correct me if i’m wrong
