I currently have an offer to work at HBO on HBO Max. I am wondering how strong the tech org is? How are they perceived by other companies? Are they on par with Netflix, Hulu and the other streaming providers? YoE: 5 Offer: 190k base, 25% bonus, 40k sign on Current TC: 165k base plus lots of private stock @HBO #offer
I'm enjoying the free shows they are currently offering, but the HBO GO app is just horrid. It doesn't give me any interest in actually paying for HBO once the free stuff is over. So, their app tech doesn't seem good.
Prestige is for suckers look for career growth and comp growth
You are likely to get around 400k if you work for Netflix.
YOE? Tech or Non Tech?
YOE: 5 and tech role.
Is 25% bonus the average/target? Or is it like the max
Average. Ranges from 25-40% based off performance review and company performance
OP, can you tell me the role? Is this at Burbank, CA? Are you on a h1b visa?
Engineer in Seattle. Not H1b.
“Prestige”... lol. Have you seen our apps?
Are you not confident Max will up the bar? Lots of talk about pouring a ton of resources into it.
We are investing heavily and actually are building an engineering team to do it for the first time. We have a lot of tech that is more decent than you’d expect, but we do not have the level of capabilities that Netflix does and especially the client framework shows it’s age. We have historically not had the engineers to do all the things. I think it’s a good org especially if you’re of a growth mindset and want to tackle new challenges that yes maybe another company has figured out but there’s probably only a handful that have. And we have a truly decent WLB. If you want to optimize for tech prestige or TC go to FAANGs though, I can’t lie to you. Compared to where you are now though it’s probably quite a leg up. Most people leave us to go to google facebook or amazon to get top TC which I consider a compliment.
Not close to Netflix or Hulu.. their tech and UX is terrible (check out HBO Now app quality). This is why their core strategy is distribution through partners. The HBO MaX product and tech leadership are all exDirectTV - who wouldn't be considered benchmarks anywhere in the tech industry except west LA ... But if it gives you a salary bump and a better job it's worth it ... It'll be a good resume builder and a stepping stone to your next career move
Great insight, thanks bud.
Also if you make it in time for the big launch of HBO-Max .. that is a massive talking point in future interviews
What is the offer?
Fixed post. Offer is for 260k TC.
I am sure it is not as prestigious as working at Netflix but you can work at HBO and move to Netflix. Get some experience. The offer doesn't seem that bad for HBO but low comparing to offers you get from other streaming services
