Hey blinders! I am a new grad who recently started investing in Vanguard. I am an F-1 student and is on OPT right now. I created an Vanguard account 2 months back in which I mentioned myself as a resident alien. I have invested around 10k till now. Since I am a non resident alien would that cause issue in future? Should I simply withdraw my money and close the account? Are we legally allowed to have a vanguard account or is it only for resident aliens? Thanks in advance :) #personalfinance #investments
It's weird how it works because they use resident on different terms. You are actually a resident alien, anyone authorized to work and dependants who stay over 163 or so days are legal resident aliens, that's also why you have to pay taxes, otherwise there's a way to claim it back. What you're getting confused with is being a permanent resident alien, which is a green card holder, which seems you're not, but that's not a problem for the situation you are describing.
I think that students on F1 are actually nonresident aliens. There's a special exception to the irs substantial presence test for that

Nobody cares. It is against their terms of service and it is illegal to lie on your application though. That being said, again, nobody cares
