Expert role at BCG

- Background: 10 yoe as IC in digital - Currently at FB as IC5, can't complain about team, wlb, tasks and comp - Prospected for a digital marketing expert role (multiple level of seniority, TBD) Should I likely trade off WLB for rather lateral move but with BCG brand to boost future career? #consulting #measurement #bcg #faang #facebook

Probably not. Are you sure you want a consulting lifestyle? And also consultants are at the top of the hierarchy in MBB, as a digital expert unfortunately you will be lower in the invisible hierarchy

I know consulting is intense, I somehow assumed experts had it slightly more relaxed?

Will depend on the study - but usually no. You will have a similar kind of pressure and hours

Don’t do it. Mbb dreams of exiting to fb. If you want to drop wlb for career, take half the extra hours you’d spend working and traveling (10-15/week) and add more scope to your role to hit IC6

Definitely considering escalating my commitment to reach IC6. I'll up or out myself so to say

Facebook qHII81 Jun 8, 2021

Yup. For me, 2 year personal up or out at each level

Agreed with what someone said above that consultants are top of “hierarchy”. The bluntest way to say it is you’d be joining as a “second class citizen”, if you’re okay with that (lots of people are) Experts sometimes have WLB better, sometimes worse, depending on the project. The interactions can be transactional sometimes because experts are often less client facing

Thanks for the context! How is reflected the second class status on the daily work beyond interactions being somewhat transactional? Career development, comp, etc

Comp is lower at each level (but I don’t have visibility into how much lower - wild guess 10-40% but the gap gets much bigger the more senior you are), it’s NOT up or out (which has its pros and cons), you have to work on multiple projects at once (whereas consultants work on 1 project at a time until they become principals), you don’t get to own client relationships, and I think you can’t become an equity partner MD but not 100% sure on that, you can’t try out different industries/domains as you’re limited to your specific expert topic Some people switch from the consultant track to the expert track and it’s considered a step back, some people deliberately make that decision after they can’t get promoted I’m just focusing on the negative stuff because you asked about it, but don’t let me dissuade you if it’s what you want!
