What is driving inflation in 🇺🇸
First off, Thank you for reading this and being on Blind. Y’all are all awesome and I value everyone’s opinions! I’ve been offered $80/hr in the Bay Area to work at Meta as a DS 3. Some benefits like medical and I am arguing for some pto as well. I have 4 YOE in tech and another 4 owning/operating a small business out of undergrad. I’m also 1 semester away from finishing part time masters in Business Analytics. Currently a Business Analyst at Google and have max 1 more year of contract left if I choose to stay. Current pay is $74/hr medical, no pto but a few sick days. Last 6 weeks work has been very slow. Like painfully nothing to do basically. Which is kind of nice given I get to go in office and it’s amazing here. AMAZING…. I love it to the core, fully drunk on cool-aide. I don’t want to leave this amazing lifestyle they provide tbh but I know what’s best for my career is to go to Fb as a DS 3 vs business analyst for Ops/Logistics Questions: Should I move to Meta for better pay and growth potential? I can see how being product focused at Meta is better for career vs being ops focused at Google. Not to mention title change and chance to use ML at work and not just at school. Long term would like to use Python daily with ML models. Can/will Meta convert me to full time? I am tired of being a second class techie aka contractor. Recruiter did say they could extend the contract and or turn me full time but I don’t believe what they say for obvious reasons. Any other advice? Also it’s scary leaving google given they will offer another year to me and could ask for more money at that point. While Meta is only offering 6 months at this point. #meta #google #contractor
Just interview for fte ds at meta
How did you find the contract role?
Recruiter Reached out on LinkedIn
Just more info. even if you get full time offer it (ds) still is second class citizen
Hmm, not sure if you want to gamble just 6 months. What is your current title at Google?
No. Too short contract, not worth jumping. Stay at GG til you find better opportunities
Lol @ people who think Meta is actually a good place to work
it’s a great place to learn and have impact
You're still there...
What's meta?
Facebook, it changed its name to meta
Isn't it the parent company they changed, the social network is still named Facebook or am i wrong
Why contract when Meta has so many open roles for DS?
FYI. My friend makee $65/hr in Rocky Mount, NC as a pharma validation engineer. You are lowballed by vendor I guess.
Firstly congrats OP! The hourly wage difference is something you can ignore. Although the $6/hr difference leads to ~$1k in gross increase, the net increase after tax might not be that meaningful. The consideration should be around the other aspects, e.g. Likelihood to convert to full time position (if that’s a goal), exit ops, growth potential, etc. And downside risk. If you made the move and didn’t like your new role, how likely can you get your current position back? If the chances are high, then you really don’t have much of a risk in moving anywhere. Moving from Ops to product DS is the biggest upside I see. However, I don’t think Product DSs at FB do a lot of ML. The work is a lot about metric definition and experimentation. You should double check this. Tldr: 1. Don’t focus too much on the wage difference (given that it’s small) 2. Check how easily can you get back to Google if you don’t like Meta 3. Check which team you’ll be joining at FB to see if you’d be good at the job. 4. Check the contractor to full time conversion rate at FB.
I heard very few FB contractors get converted....
This is great feedback and I really appreciate you taking the time to write me. I agree they put ML in the JD to lure me haha. The team I am under is totally expanding and I think I’ll be a good fit. I could probably get my role back at Google TBH. Good points! Would love to hear anyone else’s experience with converting contractor to full time or even chances of extending 6 month contract in general.
