He never went in to the school. Instead he hid outside behind a concrete pillar until SWAT arrived. He had a handgun. The killer had an AR. Would you have gone in? He has been suspended without pay.
firemen have a saying: you only ever do one brave act, and that's stepping forward and taking the oath. The rest is just doing your duty. So this guy failed to do his duty. Fire him.
He resigned.
Just awful.
The guy just quit. Frankly, he should. He wasn’t cut out for this job and he has to live with the consequences of it. He might have died saving the kids. He might have got the shooter and lived and been a hero. Can’t ever know. But when a security guard is totally out gunned by the shooter, you get what you pay for with armed security. More reason to question the “good guy with a gun” hero theory. Or the armed teacher theory from that matter. Read about the simulated replay scenarios after the VTech massacre. Even with a gun and knowing the shooter was coming, the good guy with a gun theory failed. You literally need to be actively, tactically military trained to perform well in this scenario.
He was not a guard. He was an armed police deputy, and he ran. Arming teachers will remove "gun-free" zones that psychos seek out, don't focus too much on shootout scenarios.
From what I understand, they allowed him to retire with all his retirement benefits
I'm pretty sure if I were him I'd hide behind the pillar. Handgun is no match for an AR. I'd go in with backup when it arrived, multiple responders might be able to pin down the shooter. I think people are being unfair to him. Going in with a handgun vs AR just results in one more casualty. And I agree that arming teachers isn't the answer, they won't know how to engage and will just get themselves killed. Most likely they won't even manage to keep their pea shooters out of the hands of their students resulting in more tragedy.
If you train the teachers, mass killers won't go there in the first place. They choose gun-free zones, every time.
Yeah let's have guns everywhere then. Movie theatres hospitals malls churches
I feel for this guy. Probably paid very little, I’d bet not trained to deal with a situation like this. He’s probably going to carry guilt with him the rest of his life- this may have ruined him. I was raised around and trained to shoot; I’m a really good marksman but even I know that in a situation like this, even if I managed not to freeze in terror, my aim would be compromised. There are studies in this, even with trained police. People who claim they’d go all hero Rambo are full of it and frankly scarier to me than a shooter.
He is an armed police officer. What do you mean "not trained"? He did not miss, he failed to go in.
He was paid 75,000 a year. That’s a decent salary. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/365122002
He was a sheriff deputy not a rent a cop. He should have acted. He will live with that decision for the rest of his life.
Yes. He will live.
He will live and enjoy his pension.
I bet somebody, maybe family of the teacher who died defending the students will sue him
I don’t blame him. When someone comes at you firing 400 rounds a minute compared to your 9 round magazine there’s not much opportunity to be a hero in this situation. Just get the fuck out of there
First, you cannot fire 400 rounds per minute with a semi-auto. One trigger pull, one shot. Second, 17 rounds + spare mags (talking the issued Glock here) are enough for 1 non-armored target. You do need to be a hero, I agree, but it's clearly easier for a would-be armed teacher to be a hero in these circumstances.
Theoretical yield is 400 rounds a minute with alterations, expert yield is 180 rounds a minute firing 3 shots a second and average yield is 90 rounds a minute firing 2 shots a second, reloading every 20 seconds. I was exaggerating to make a point... semi-autos are a different type of killing machine than a normal pistol. Second, arming teachers is laughable. I know several teachers, none of which would be better off carrying a gun. They teach math and English to 1st graders, and shouldn’t be expected to be part of a militia at school.
What a distraction. Get rid of the guns.
One thing is for sure: I hope the teachers have more balls than this dude
Yeah education majors who work with kids all day are going to do better then a security officer 😂
lol the teachers with guns will NEVER happen. They do not want to have guns.
