Earlier in my career I worked at NASA, several DARPA research projects, big international companies but I didn’t keep my skills sharp and didn’t specialize (I stayed a generalist). These days I can barely program and become an expendable middle manager. Any advice? Try to become an IC again? Double down into mgmt? (If so how?) YoE 18
With that many years of experience, you’re shooting yourself in the foot by becoming an IC. Kids these days can code faster than you can on your best day. The bar is infinitely higher. You’re fighting an uphill battle that is actually, in your favor.
Man this is pretty gloom...
Haha only a junior would think coding faster makes you a better IC. No go for it man, I switched to IC from mgmt after 20 years and having the time of my life.
what’s your TC? gotta know what you’re at and what you wanna be at
TC is enough to frugally support a family of 4 in the SF Bay Area. I don’t need much more but sure would love to send my kids to college without them paying for it! (Can’t do that with my current trajectory.)
