I just wanted to warn anybody who might read this now or in the future to never ever join Capital One if you have any other better offers. This place is the worst. Here are some reasons why: 1. Stack ranking twice a year with results in anywhere from 6-20+% of the population forced into the "below strong" category. This % is tweaked every six months depending on how much "attrition" they want. 2. Politics here is the worst. 3. You'll get to see a grown ass man (the ceo) cry/weep once a year on the company all call. Last year it was for Taylor Swift. Can you imagine an old ass man crying to a grown ass women singing about her love failures? 4. People routinely make stuff up and throw people under the bus to meet the forced distribution for the bi-annual stack ranking games. 5. The internal culture is in the gutters at the moment. 6. This company does not reward technical skill, it rewards popularity and the ability to talk nonsense. You'll see people use buzz words overly to beef up their presentations. 7. Again, technical talent here is not the best. The tech here is trash. 8. Every internal project is poorly documented and nobody knows how anything works. You've got to ask around to learn how anything works and after you've asked, you'll realize nobody knows anything. 9. Gaslighting is very common here. 10. And i have to state this again if you missed my 1st point, stack ranking here is the absolute worst. It breaks down a human and demoralizes everybody. They literally make stuff up to meet the distribution. They lie without any shame. When i interviewed here i was sold the idea that this company cares about its people and is a great stable place to work. That was an absolute lie! Heed this warning. #swe
I thought Amazon was the worst.
They say all the failed Amazon leaders joined here and ruined the culture. Not sure how true it is.
At least Amazon pays more.
Meta says 👋
At least meta pays well.
Seems like most other companies, the worst part is probably not these bullet points but TC. If you have to suffer, why suffer with low TC.
Exactly
Another problem at C1 that is common elsewhere is down-leveling you and saying you’re only 6-12 months away from promotion, then making you grind probably for 24-30 months before you’ll get it. But when the TC of the rung above you is already mid, this really stinks
TC?
Everyone's TC here is shit. Unless you're maybe director+. That's the thing, they should not subject people to this kind of nonsense for this pay. It should be a stable job for this TC.
Don't C1 TDPs make like 125k+? That's not shit TC lmao. You're delusional. Just cause it's not FAANG level TC.
Also Tyson's area sucks big time
How so? Have relatives in the McLean area and it seemed at least decent when I visited.
Bloomberg it’s not where young people who didn’t grow up here want to live. But same critique or worse applies to Silicon Valley
I got pipped recently, everything is true. If you’re a new grad or even experienced, if you truly want to learn engineering, do not come here. I learned more from a small company that paid me pennies. My brain has shrunk a lot from filling out forms to deploy apps and doing manual tasks instead of coding here. Please stay away!! (swear to god)
Same here, I should have just stayed where I was at as I learned so much more there. I couldn't believe the engineering culture and practices at Capital One and was shocked. Saw applications with no automated tests, huge PRs with 1000s lines of code and multiple features, most had no clue how to write a story properly, waterfall planning - just couldn't believe it. It's as if someone collected a list of best practices and said "let's do the exact opposite of all of these".
Are we talking SDE or SDM?
OP you should share this in Capital One blind forum and ask everyone there to share it here 😂
Please help me do it
Just share your link to this post on the closed form and ask if anyone else wanna join the social service
I agree it sucks here
Truly
I turned down a offer last year due to all the negative comments at C1 that I heard from ex-C1 employees.
Thank God. Count your blessings.
I worked at C1 and while it was toxic, there was also no work to do so it was a great company to work for while interviewing at other companies. I think towards the last 6 months I was there, I was working maybe 3 hours for the entire week (and 2.5 hours was for mandatory standup).

What do you think is wrong with a kid who got rejected by 9 colleges?
But they are all good at Leetcode?
Some of these guys can't even leetcode. They've stayed here so long their brains have shrunk and all they know now is how to play the internal stack ranking game.
