Personally I like to read ignorant imgur on Reddit.
It’s a very difficult space to be in and I can’t see them having a great exit or end. It’s also hard to sell (in a way similar to tumblr). I can see users going off to the next site or the next big thing.
I am also not sure what’s the business model of 9gags. They both have to sell ads at some point.

I think both do but even with ads their traffic is ridiculous. And their users tend to be more tech savvy with ad blockers/using the direct link.
Plus Imgur has a lot of NSFW content that they can’t monetize.
They’re also so dependent on Reddit. I know that Imgur has a form of community but I would be surprised if the majority of their views are not via Reddit. So with Reddit pushing their new video player/gif, images etc. Imgur is going to have a very tough time.
It’s just really hard to solve and I’m not really sure what they can really do without alienating their users.
