AI driven mass layoffs have begun: SDEs are being replaced

https://www.fastcompany.com/90888639/dropbox-tech-industry-layoffs-ai-job-cuts One good thing about this is that it will greatly drive down wages across tech, resulting in cheaper housing.

OP needs reading comprehension. The article says nothing about AI replacing engineers, it’s about companies needing engineers with AI skillsets to develop AI driven products

Amazon zfgs May 1, 2023

OP going to get replaced by an AI

Google tonzai May 1, 2023

To some AI means “artificial intelligence” to others it can arguably mean “actual intelligence”

Meta 🫡verse May 1, 2023

That just means they are hiring AI specialists

Adobe azMB64 May 1, 2023

Now all engineers are already studying ML courses so they will all become AI engineers

Amazon havahe May 1, 2023

Yes, every 200k-300k CRUD monkey is going to become an AI specialist

Paytm    ͏ May 1, 2023

So what else do you suggest?

Cisco DXt8ymdZcv May 1, 2023

Driving down wages won’t result in cheaper housing, the buyers are mostly institutional and foreign investors, not individual wage earners. OP sounds like he wants to eat the bugs and own nothing and be happy.

Amazon havahe May 1, 2023

No actually, they aren't. Investors are still small factor kn the market (with extremely high risk of regulation) and investors won't invest when there are no buyers 😂 Bay Area is held up entirely by overpaid tech workers whose wage bubble is now popping.

Cisco DXt8ymdZcv May 1, 2023

The Bay Area is a fraction of the real estate market, and is also heavily propped by investors, whether they call themselves that or not. Prop 13 NIMBYS

Pearson _concerned May 1, 2023

OP can’t read, no wonder they’re afraid of ChatGPT.

Amazon lpstrong May 1, 2023

@havahe can you please share a list of companies using chatGPT to do all this. I’d love to short them over the next 4 years.

Cisco DXt8ymdZcv May 1, 2023

This thread makes it obvious Amazon didn’t lay off enough H1Bs.

Intel HuRb51 May 1, 2023

Well AI tools did make a bunch of ppl get laid off here in semi a few years back. I guess some part of the swe space will be laid off (eg AI can do front end stuff, database stuff, QA etc). I think it’s a no brainer that such swe will get laid off this decade.

Optimizely opshit May 1, 2023

What areas do you reckon are less prone to this sort of automation ?

Optimizely opshit May 1, 2023

*areas of software engineering

Netflix SuaveDuck May 1, 2023

OP didn’t read the article. They’re focusing on AI skills, which the current workforce lacks, so the 16% can’t fill that new role. AI didn’t replace their jobs.

If you need explanation, you likely will be replaced by chatGPT as you obviously lack some fundamental critical thinking to reason about how the world works. By your logic which you contradicted in your own statement, everyone should use either use one drive or google drive and everyone should just drive Mercedes instead of BMW
