I’ve heard so many terrible takes from boomers and managers claiming that AI is going to take away jobs. The hysteria is sickening, and it is fueled by the same companies who get stock pumps from the fear and hype. Look how easy it is in the market rn, all you have to do is claim you’re breaking new ground in AI and that it will change the world and people will need to adjust to the innovation. Tesla, a car company, that sells cars, misses and underperforms, and yet their “promise” of FSD that has been push for 12 years is just continuing, and now they want to be priced as an AI company, not a car company… I can tell you, from all I’ve worked on in my years and the research in AI I’ve been involved with, no one is being replaced by the AI we have now. In fact, it will make more jobs. All you have to do is evaluate how often requirements, circumstances, and features change overtime, and how wrong your initial assumptions are with whatever it is you’re working on. Even the simplest tasks, are way more reliably and safely performed by humans who at an instant notice can change what they’re doing and adapt and not need a bunch of supervised information and LORA adaptations or fine-tuning to be effective. You will see FSD before any other job replacement. But FSD is a long long ways away. All the web3 shills that claimed crypto was going to change the world forever have just pivoted to AI. And we have to bear their nonsense as they ruin more great ideas that need time and care to develop.
AI will replace you OP because you're living under a rock
Wow. With such an NPC response like that I’d fear other humans to take my jobs than AI if I were you.
AI is real but not hype
What does that even mean though? The majority of “AI” people talk about is just clever statistics based off of papers from the 90s. Even the Transformer, that paper was published 7 years ago, where is the AI takeover based on that paper? How many more years? AI has always been. The hype is insufferable.
Haha ai hasn’t even taught robot how to pick up a plate and serve to restaurant goers, without smashing the plate because of too much force or dropping the plate because too little force.
Exactly. But I mean even in conversation. I spoke with someone saying they’re replacing their customer support, and I was like… good luck with that.
AI is the next .com bubble
Yep. So sad. It didn’t have to be though, this hype was driven by greed from these corporations and startups to pump their stocks and value. Metaverse? No, we’re AI now. VR? Nah, just AI. Selling electric vehicles? Nope, just AI.
Shhh don’t let this get out to our Wall St overlords
🤣
All executives and managers just use AI as a cover for their failures on past projects. “You know, we were making great progress before, but we need to drop all that and forget it because AI is what will keep us competitive!”
Generative AI isn't really replacing entire industries. But once there's real AI it'll replace most white collar jobs. Once there's real AI with good battery tech then it'll start replacing blue collar jobs. It will happen. We're just not there yet.
I've found that the people on the A.I. hype train generally don't have a handle of the complexities involved in software engineering or don't really understand the current limitations of A.I. or the history of all the similar claims we've heard for decades that never came to pass. People in general are slow and it takes a while for reality to get to them.
Funny thing about software. There's always an infinite back log. So AI tools can help us build faster and smarter, but then that just becomes another factor to compete and not an actual replacement. AI tools can do parts of my job, and frankly does pretty good at those parts. I welcome my higher productivity, but have no illusion that we're as close to some great replacement as the ministry of hype would have us believe. Physically, the cycles per second, networking, perfect data storage, the advent of quantum, etc... mean that eventually machines will wholesale outperform humans at everything. But it's a loooooong way off still.
This is all bubble waiting to burst. But I won’t bet against nvidia or amd. We still need more computing power.

“It’s sickening” sorry to hear, hope you feel better soon
I will once the bubble pops. Thanks for the concern.
