I am on the software side of things, not particularly familiar with chip design / foundries etc. Is no one apart from NVDA making AI chips ? Don’t almost all major companies with huge data centers make their own non AI chips ? AWS has Annapurna labs GCP does its own chips.
LightMatter is. They just raised 150+ million USD on funding for their products that are solely focused on photonics based AI accelerators that are meant to be 4x faster and 30% more power efficient
There were like 50 startups trying to do just that. Only a few left standing: cerebras, samba nova…
NVDA is like AMC. All FOMO driven.
AMD cough
It took years and billions for nvidia to create cuda chips, and there stock got hit for years because of it. Making chips period is really hard, takes a long time, and is really expensive, just look at China who spent many billions trying to make their own phabs and nothing came of it.
It’s more a python library x cuda thing than no one else making AI chips. Expect it to break over next 18 months, Intel got PyTorch support for their at best mid level GPUs out and it’s 80% the speed of nvidias best at 20% of the cost. I wouldn’t buy puts unless they are long dated, hugging face is still pricing the worst nvidia gpu at 1/5th of the gpus cost _monthly_
Why are you guys at Google not making your TPUs available for wider use? I mean it’s not as if there is no market for that
We are, they’ve been avail forever. Posted this as separate comment but it’s better here: nb as long as I’m pontificating, Google is like 1990 Apple of AI, got all its own stuff but it doesn’t matter lol. TPUs, TF, who cares unless you’re a line manager who doesn’t know what’s actually going on in AI (or you work at this insipid place)
