HW role at AMD Austin, work looks promising. No complaints about my role at Microsoft (Redmond,WA). I was planning to move to Austin because SEATTLE has become expensive. Is it wise to move from a $2T company to AMD ? AMD TC: Base: 145K Stock: 60k over 3yrs Sign on: 10K Bonus: 15% Current TC: 155K YOE: 6 #semiconductor #hardware #amd #microsoft
Nope. Just comparing current role to offer.
The offer is okay for Austin but not great compared to Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft (new hires).
AMD stocks vest over 3 years. At least that used to be the case. Did they switch to a 4 year vest?
I'm sorry, I edited it. They vest over 3yrs.
Have you looked at the expenses in Austin lately? Expenses were already increasing rapidly over the last 5 years but it has skyrocketed in the last year. What role is this?
It is with package team, on the hardware design side. Sorry cannot reveal further details.
Do it, AMD is a great company and equally as reputable as Microsoft. You’ll learn a lot and Austin is a really cool place.
Thank you for the recommendation. It's with the package team, on the hardware Engineering side. Sorry, cannot reveal more details.
Austin is no longer cool. It has been destroyed.
Good offer take it.
Don’t do it - I did a similar move and did not like it. Microsoft is adding lot of hw jobs in Austin, you can try those for internal transfer. People move from AMD to msft/Apple usually, not the other way around
Hi thanks for the suggestion. Could you elaborate on what have you not liked please? Is it the benefits/ Compensation/ Work culture/ the work itself?
AMD is like a startup with lot of work. They have a problem of retaining people or hiring enough. The compensation is decent when stock keep doubling every couple of month. However, it seems like it might have reached closer to a peak now. The perception is that MSFT and Apple TC is much much better than AMD in the long run and so is the work life balance and culture. i am just generalizing. It varies a lot from group to group.
Join AMD if you want to do some cool and interesting work. Offer is good given it's AMD. Of course if TC is more important to you you can get more at Apple or Nvidia. Austin is a great city that I personally would move to. AMD's culture is a bit start-uppy, which I enjoy as it allows to constantly grow and learn. My EOY is 10 if that matters.
Nice, I feel the same looking at the job responsibilities, there is an opportunity to learn. Thanks for your valuable suggestion.
MTS?? RSU Too low I heard 150K for Austin is doable. Ask 5K more for base.
Yes it is MTS.
What is the maximum that we can push on RSU? I also received 60k/3 for SMTS.
OP..did you endup joining AMD finally? how did the negotiations go with them?
I accepted the offer. They were not flexible on the base pay. I feel I could have done a better a job with RSU n Sign on. I haven't pushed them either.
Thanks OP. In a similar situation.. is it ok to DM you?
Move internally?
