Hi folks, I’m in a bit of a pickle here. I have 1.5 YOE as a data engineer and was laid off couple of months ago. I got offers from two companies: AT&T and a startup focusing on Renewable energy. While AT&T is offering me more money, it is in Redmond which is extremely expensive and startup is in a college town in Delaware which might have better vibes and cheaper. Since it’s a startup I’ll be wearing a lot of hats and learn a lot whereas I’ve heard AT&T is completely bureaucratic but might offer better WLB. Is there a future in Renewable Energy? Can I get a job at a FAANG later on if I join a non-tech startup? Please help me choose an offer! #energybbdo #telecom #dataengineer #swe #software #offer
Renewable Energy startups are largely like playing the lottery. Sure, eventually someone is going to come along and disrupt fossil fuels, but between now and then there will be thousands of companies that are peddling snake oil, have tech that is fundamentally flawed, are trying to get widespread adoption of something uneconomical, etc. I think you may believe you are considering joining a “startup” but really you are joining a small business with poor prospects, or at worst are getting sucked into a job selling solar panels door to door or some nonsense.
renewable energy is a scam, att
Crap, I need to throw away my solar panels now.
There are those companies that don't develop anything, but act as middle man contractors between government grants, contractors, and consumers

I made mistakes by joining a startup. This whole “wearing lot of hats and learning lot” sounded exciting to me too. Trust me it comes with the cost of horrible WLB. Most startups dont have any culture in place. You will learn a lot at ATT. My friend worked there for an year and then moved to FAANG. He never complained, enjoyed his time and loved WLB as well as benefits.
