FAANG and big tech keep laying off despite record profits and hiring freezes are the norm. I feel blessed to have a well paying job that I feel secure in (even if it's at amazon 😀). Is the job market brutal for new grads? Do you think it will reduce the number of students going into computer science?
It’s cold out there 😣
It's bad even for mid level.
Many of the senior / staff / principle level employees that got laid off are doing downlevelled work because opportunities are hard to come by nowadays, so that means you're competing against people who have strong references and work experience for 5-15 yrs. It's brutal.
For entry level it’s bad due to how much CS enrollment increased. For mid to senior level I don’t think it’s bad it’s just we are used to 2019-2022 levels of hiring where just passing the LC questions got you a job.

Brutal even if you graduated from top CS schools… ask me how I know
How you know ? 👀
I graduated from a top CS school right when FAANG was closing its doors… It took me many months of sending in hundreds of applications to get a few interviews let alone an offer. I had good internships under my belt. Granted I was a bit lazy and started job searching late (a couple months before graduation), but it still took me almost a year. I’ve even had multiple hiring managers/engineers say to my face they want to hire me based off my resume but cant due to hiring freezes etc… really sad to hear. It also didn’t help that I was a bit picky and did not want to work for a specific industry that seems to be unaffected by the current economic situation.
on a scale of 1 to 10 . its a 100 sir
Brutal. Absolutely brutal for everyone.
The question is - When will it improve 😪
My guess is probably 2025
That's what everyone was saying from 2022
Yes it’s brutal lol
