Posting for a friend. I received new grad SWE offers from Meta and AWS AI. I am mainly concerned about my growth and job safety at this point. With meta hiring in large numbers, I’m skeptical and worried there might be layoffs and being in an internal team might make things worse for me. On the other hand, I’m questioning if passing up an opportunity with meta would be a mistake. I interned with AWS in a different org and tbh my experience was pretty nice! What should I choose? What metrics do I prioritize? I’m also looking to be SWE in ML in long term so that’s a point to consider. Both are Software engineer roles but in ML heavy teams(either working on an ML product or utilizing ML heavily) *Amazon offer is L4 and rsu is 6k for the first year* first year TC comes out to ~185k at Amazon. Can’t edit the offer once posted.
There are no annual bonuses at Amazon unless it’s a brand new structural comp change that will be rolled out soon.
Location?
L4 Amazon is Seattle, Meta in SF
Amazon only offers 149 for new grads? I thought it was more.
180. OP put his 1st year numbers which get divided by 4 instead of his four year numbers
AWS AI has really bad WLB. Go to Meta
AWS AI will just be generic backend microservices work but with bad wlb
I would go for Meta for a simple reason - Ai tools in Amazon are very immature and under pressure to hit the market - Amazon is pushing more and more to do more with less - Level based if Meta offers E3 the same in Amazon is Lvl 4 SDE - Compensation in Amazon is written in stone and once you are in, Promo is a very complex and challenging process. I know promo in Meta is easier On the other side in Amazon there are a tons of very knowledgeable people.
If SWE in ML is your longer term goal then Meta has a lot of opportunities for that. Not sure about transferable ML skills outside of Meta but that's a hurdle for another time
