What are some of the pros and cons for working in sales at AWS? I’m in incoming summer DGR intern who is hoping to obtain a return offer at the end of the summer to work full time at AWS.
Hey man. I just did this internship last summer. Imo, it’s the best sales job out of college, I turned down google for it. The comment above me is true but speaking more from a standpoint of an enterprise AE. The pros are accurate so I’ll add a few of my own and cons from the perspective of an SDR Additional pros: - Structured promo path. You’ll learn about the STAR program, but you essentially can reach AE in 18-24 months. - Vast majority (80-90%) hit quota - Layoffs rare Actual cons: No commissions, you get a performance bonus and it makes up 20k out of 150k of your comp. You can exceed it by max of 125% to make 25k instead. Benefits are bad compared to peers What segment youre in matters ONCE you move to outbound. For example, enterprise engaged is much easier than greenfield. Make sure you place well. Overall tho, none of this matters until you get the job, graduate college, and start working. In my experience, most people get the return offer, but with the economy the way it is I would give it 110%. Try getting your cloud practitioner cert before you start to stand out.
Great insights here, and you read between the lines quite well, I support the Enterprise Engaged team 😉
How is enterprise engaged compared to ISV in terms of difficulty?
No commission?....
Pros: 1. brand value 2. great tech 3. talented peers 4. cloud adoption still has room for growth Cons: 1. burn out culture because peers view you as competition & some managers suck 2. if you have named/dedicated accounts then your success is largely dependent on their continuing to grow. 3. Many companies right now are in 'cost cutting mode', making it harder to meet quota
