Does anyone have an impression that AWS coordinated with Twitter, Apple and Facebook to block Trump and his supporters from using Parler today? Parler app was unresponsive most of the day. Incidentally, Redfin app (also backed by AWS) was also unresponsive. AWS health dashboard seems clean, but wonder if anyone else noticed more weird things going on today. UPDATE: while it's unclear whether AWS sabotaged Parler on Friday, they straight up kicked them off service on Saturday: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/johnpaczkowski/amazon-parler-aws
I have no knowledge of this, but I don’t think they blocked it. Makes more sense that Parler got a huge surge of traffic and they got overloaded. However, I also wouldn’t put it past AWS to do that. Every other tech company has been colluding together to wipe all conservative voices from their platforms today.
This is what happened. Amazon is considering dropping the service from them if they don’t start monitoring dangerous activity on their platform. According to their executive, that would be the final nail in the coffin. They can’t operate as they do now without the cloud service
Whether AWS did something or not, my guess is that 2021 will be the year of alt-tech
AWS employees should demand that their leadership provide an ultimatum to Parler, immediately improve moderation on your platform or find another cloud/data center provider.
How do you propose to "improve moderation"? Should cloud providers have moderation police on staff now that will decide whether service meets moderation bar? Hey, why stop there? Let's form The Ministry of Information which will decide what platform/service is allowed to operate based on how well the content is aligned with the Party Line!
Private company dude, they have no obligation to provide a bullhorn to hate. Oh and there's absolutely no way they can improve moderation within 24 hours... So really this is just a way to shut them down, at least for a bit.
Aws allows porn and violence. If aws is all of sudden high and mighty it would shut down Twitter, Reddit and many other sites.
And of course there are already campaigning idiots https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-09/amazon-worker-group-calls-for-cloud-unit-to-drop-parler
And they did it - https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/johnpaczkowski/amazon-parler-aws
I don't know if they need a coordination. I'm sure aws employees are proud of this move.
🇨🇳 would be prouder. Imagine how much easier their diplomats’ jobs just became having these talking points to throw at their 🇺🇸 counterparts. Sure. The US can still push through, being the stronger country after all. But they’ll just look like clowns.
Indeed, US has proven themselves to be no better than China here. So much for all the talk of freedom. They should go all the way, force everyone to use WeChat and monitor social credit score based on how strongly you support Critical Race Theory.
Good even if they find a hosting company it will be nowhere near as good as AWS or any of the other big boys and they’ll be susceptible to DoS attacks and the like. I’m waiting for the FBI to seize their domain.🍿
Read up on how Putin tried to control Telegram. This is no different and will end up the same. The positive outcome here - we'll have yet another nation which will become more technically literate, learning to use VPN, Tor and other methods of concealing your footprint.
VPN doesn’t help against DoS attacks.
The timing is suspect, so I believe it is well coordinated. John Matze has AWS ties but not enough to sway them. FAANG are begging for antitrust, anti-competitive lawsuits.
Wow aws can just ban a company like that, just wow
Yes, of course. They own the service. They can do what they want to.
Technically, they violated ToS. But of course it's political. When Microsoft was booting Gab off Azure they had the decency to send multiple warnings, and it took a long time, enough for Gab to build out infra elsewhere.
I'm really glad amazon joined in with apple and google to block parler. If parler wants to incite hate and violence, they can find another hosting platform and another way to provide updates to their app. I'm all for conservative social media, but folks on that platform have already planned a coup and are now planning for a civil war.
One of Trumps aides said he was pissed that his supporters rioting in the Capitol looked “Too Low Class”. 😂
I'm not surprised. Trump has been milking his base for donations since the election. He's probably raked in millions from these "low class" people!
I wonder where 4chan is hosted
At least 4chan is smart enough to hide behind cloudflare but even cf was smart enough to kick out 8chan

You know Parler? The "free speech platform" where the conservatives have been slowly migrating over past year? Watch the timeline of today: 1. Twitter blocks DT's personal account 2. He tweets from POTUS account that he's going to Parler. That post is deleted by Twitter. 3. Parler app is gone from Apple Store and Play Store 4. Parler app itself (I had it installed) has issues all day - timeouts, etc All within 12 hours. Could be that just people started flooding it, could be a DDOS or could be an action by AWS.
It could have also been aliens or fluctuations in spacetime or parallel universes. Who knows.
