How was the interview process? Overall pros/cons? Creative space and support? How different from past experiences?
Wouldn’t bother with AWS as a designer. The new style guide is lame and the process is riddled with arbitrary approval-gating. Just a frustrating place to be.
Was an internal transfer. Pros: You’ll learn a lot about cloud. Close exposure to phenomenal engineers. Witness the creation of some awesome technology, and possibly influence (not likely) Cons: Terrible design system Extremely bureaucratic and tedious Shaky support for UX Weak design managers, many of whom are just failed engineers Space & support: None to speak of. I found the AWS design community to be boring. Not nearly as engaged as it used to be, and it didn’t used to be all that great to begin with. Never felt a lot of passion for the work, or for doing great design. Where are you now and who else are you talking to? I would rank this bottom of your list, unless you’re just really wanting to learn cloud. I came into AWS with reasonably high hopes and find it increasingly frustrating.
Designers with past cloud experience - are there any of those there? Would previous experience help?
Previous experience might help, or it might just irritate you more. I know of one designer who had experience at another cloud service and he expressed frustration at the new design system that’s taken over. But before that, he appreciated the speed of AWS.
