Currently in an L7 sales/account manager IC role at AWS. Working with a high-optics/large customer, so get to work on cool stuff and have a communication line in to leadership when needed. But three years in, base salary and bonus comp have slowed (stock comp still good) and signing bonus has expired. Benefits haven't improved since joining (my office doesn't even have bananas) and maternity/paternity leave is a joke. Politics is rampant. Next career growth opportunity to manager is 1-2 years out minimum and L8 even farther. Getting to work on big projects, but AWS innovation in my industry has been slooooooow and feeling the itch to explore options. Have some friends at GCP, so may have an opportunity to chat there. How does it compare? What are pros and cons vs. AWS experience? Am I being crazy to look around? Anyone at GCP open to chat about it? TC: $400K target, but likely to be $500k-$600k this year (inc. stock)
You should be aware that GCP has a very immature sales muscle since Google by DNA is product led, they just don’t know how to sell over there. Perhaps that’s an opportunity for you to exercise leadership there and imprint your style, but it will also probably be a supremely frustrating experience as a sales manager.
Thanks, appreciate the insight and good to keep in mind. Are you former GCP?
A recruiter just hit me up for a Principal AE role at AWS. Is that your current role? How is WLB and quota attainment these days?
I was in AWS sales and now I am with GCP. I hated the toxic culture at AWS. Salaries at GCP at a top notch better if you negotiate well (depends a lot on your interview performance and level) AWS is not even in the GenAI race (forget about them losing it). GCP is growing very rapidly (much faster than AWS). Go for it ! Don’t think. People who will stop you are likely the ones who couldn’t make it there. DM if you have any questions
Remember. GCP comp is 40:60 compared to 60:40 at aws. Yet you make way more money at GCP

Do you work eng accounts? YOE? Any leadership experience? At your TC I don’t see how benefits like an extra few % on a 401k match or a free $1k in your HSA are super valuable. I’d prioritize career growth > TC. Maybe look at a major ISV player as a way to break into senior leadership and boomerang back to GCP/ AWS later
Thanks! Yep, work those accounts with 17 YOE. Some management experience but not a lot. Dotted line lead for much of my team but not direct. I think you're right -- it's a good job today but I'm concerned about limited career growth prospects for (let's say) 2-5 years. Appreciate your advice and will look at ISVs.
You have a great gig. I’m not as far along in my career as you but aspire to be in senior leadership. From what I’ve seen, people usually acquire director/ VP titles at smaller places and work their way up the hierarchy. For example, the current CRO of Stripe went director at VMware -> vp at AWS -> c suite at stripe
