Crossed a line with my boss
Posting for a friend who doesn’t want to confront their abusive manager. This friend has been with Cisco over a 15 years with a good career, awarded RSUs and promoted for good work. Recently joined manager put them on documented sessions, blocked their bonus for 2 performance periods. Friend’s spouse almost died from covid related complications last year, then they had to take LOA due to the abuse from the manager and ptsd from the incident. As soon as returned from LOA, manager manipulates saying will give you good severance package and forces them to resign. Then HR says no severance package for voluntary separation. No support or sympathy from leadership except verbally. Friend tried to reach skip level manager who refused to speak. The friend has collected all evidence from teams worked with about the continued good work. manipulative manager takes all credit to their leadership for work done by friend, humiliates and compares to other colleagues. Now the friend got another opportunity within Cisco, even a grade higher, was supposed to get the offer letter after discussion with current manager. Guess what, today the HR reached out and said they will not go forward after the discussion between the managers. The HR is of no use and not supportive at all other than listening and doing nothing. Please join Cisco at your own risk!! With this systemic abuse, personal bias, harm Cisco has stooped lowest it can. #ciscocareers #abusivemanager #ciscoet&i
How is this abuse? This is only one side of the story. How do you know your friend is a good performer? Maybe she slacked or didn’t deliver well enough. Maybe she was URA so naturally won’t be hired back
Last Friday the hiring manager congratulated her and so did the HR saying that it will be a promotion to next grade.
Did you not read about manager taking credit of their work, some family health issue, then mental health issue caused to the person. Thanks for you compassionate response!
Hopefully he has evidence of ‘mgr paying severance and asking to resign’. My mgr was abusive but this story is well beyond what I went through. Your friend certainly needs to fight back. Number of such bad mgrs keeps growing. If he doesn’t fight, mgrs will do more of these things and make whole place nightmare
Amazed at the number of abusive managers at Cisco. What makes them think, they got such powers??
Yes, they are everywhere. I had one more in previous company.
One of the reasons there are many abusive managers in Cisco due to the KPI a person is made manager or director is not how good leader they are, but how much $$ either saved or made, for their current leader. And just based on that they get promoted, and get power to abuse ppl. CX org has many such director or managers.
Agreed CX is another such org.
This sadly seems to be more and more common at Cisco as they continue to push tenured, high performers out of the business and managers seem to have unchecked power to do as they please. It is sad to see the company going down this path.
Sorry for your friend going through such pain. I can’t even imagine. What’s their grade after 15 years? Is there a possibility that the new manager is asking to level up the performance for next grade and there is a disconnect between the 2 of them? You mentioned the recently joined manager, means team member is there from the past and so must be the team but leaders have changed and so expectations are different, which org is this? Blocking performance bonus for 2 periods means at least 1 year and a person who didn’t receive bonus, is clearly a non-performer so how are they getting promoted? This would be a problem in the eyes of any HR/Hiring manager/ person looking from outside, unfortunately your friend loses their case easily and so when the 2 managers met, that must have been discussed. Regardless, if I were the current manager, I would let your friend leave coz that’s what he asked anyway when they offered severance. As I typed this comment, I realize there are too many questions that open up and definitely requires knowing both sides of the story before one can judge your friend, the manager or Cisco itself. But well, If I were your friend, I would simply open a HR case against the manager and the skip for being unreasonable unless they are not. And abuse, no tolerance, aHR case would deal with it appropriately.
Cisco ET&I aka OutShift. Bad performance is very subjective. Friend received RSUs for good performance and got promoted before this manager arrived. Blocking from moving to another team equals personal vendetta.
Dang… who is that manager?
I know! Everyone I know has not been there that long.
Obviously a desi mgr
Not a desi manager this time.
Oh, in my case both mgr were desi. What location is your friend in? Sjc or rtp or Europe? Which bu?
SJC. Et&I
