Need advice. I accepted an offer last week for a big tech company which would be my dream to work for. Good pay and benefits. TC $150k Today I received another offer from a small startup, pay is lower. TC $115k I can only start work at either company on June 8th. So I have a month left and with the current work environment and layoffs Iโm worried my first offer will be rescinded if COVID gets worse. Which is why Iโm thinking about saying โyesโ to the second offer and hold onto it as backup. Then when it gets closer to June 8th telling the second offer sorry and I will not move forward with the offer I signed. Ethically I feel very uneasy doing something like that. I believe in transparency but I need to think whatโs best for me. Profile: Fresh Masters graduate Current TC : $100k YOE: 3.5 #careers #tech #sanfrancisco #covid
Since this is your first job, you're asking this question. It's a no-brainer if you're seasoned in job hunting and how tech companies work - ethics play the second fiddle to money and job safety to most of them. Accept both if you have any concerns that one of them might be rescinded. Those concerns could be for any reason. On ethical terms, this is undoubtedly wrong. You're withholding information that is going to impact the plans and state of an employer. It's clearly one or the other - whether you want to be selfish or ethically right. Don't try to justify your selfish decision otherwise. That is the first step to growth.
Like this is the whole debate of employer versus employee. If itโs the employer doing it with a lay-off itโs just business. If the employee does it itโs unethical. Sorry but we have seen today that companies donโt give a damn about their employees and it is time the employees stand up against this. Make em pay OP get ur money honey
^ What is ethically right is not based on other's probable response in the same or different scenario. It's only about the current deal and between the two parties. One's past and future actions are not relevant when deciding about what's ethically right or wrong.
Can you ask them about it and ask what will be given to you if the offer is rescinded? That can be added to the contract
Sign both and work both jobs as long as possible. Remember to steal someones identity for the 2nd job.
Accept both. As someone else stated, they wont worry too much about ethics if they rescind or lay you off.
The recruiters aren't doing the layoffs, it's beyond their scope. You know what is in their scope though? The bonus for each successful hire that people like you are falsely promising. Accepting both is the correct move to hedge your chances, but just also realize this is why recruiters have no problem ghosting/leading on other candidates.
Yes, you are screwing the recruiter and the company too. My point is while they may not purposefully screw you, they bare a much lower cost of you not showing up then you could bare if you no longer have a job to go to. They will find someone else.....and if you are sure you easily would as well, then you should factor that into your decision of what to do.
Why are you worried it will get rescinded?? Most big Tech is doing fine
The point here is that, any Employer while making an offer has no intention of rescinding the offer, sometimes for business reasons and macroeconomics reasons they might rescind offer. But this below would be a equivalent from an employer perspective of what @op is doing here is: When an employer gives out 2 offers for 2 diff persons for the same role knowing that the 2 person is just a backup if the 1st person turns out to be someone like @OP. Companies never do that you see.... Here what is unethical is not about Honoring the offer by employee or employer on a future date, but it is about knowing as a matter of fact TODAY that one of the 2 offers that @op is receiving, he is not going to honor. All in the name of hedging his position.
Just imagine what would it look like for everyone, when companies start hedging just like @op and to protect themselves from people like @op, giving the offer to the 2nd person only as a backup..... Ethics matter, to keep this subtle balance...
Agreed. It's the same selfish people that b1tch (also really blind? censoring that?) later on blind about recruiter ghosting on them. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Nothing is illegal here, just do whatever helps you sleep better at night ๐ด
