Accepting Medicaid for health coverage after layoff

I was laid off. I want to take this opportunity to introspect, work on some cool ideas and chill for some time. So, I might need health insurance for several months. Cobra is offered for health coverage, have to pay $2000 per month for family health coverage. Looked into healthcare.gov for cheaper health insurance, applied there and my app got forwarded to Texas medicaid program. Looks like I am eligible for Medicaid in Texas. The question is should I accept it? What is the level of healthcare one can expect from Medicaid? Is it similar to what we get from employers health insurance like Premera Blue cross blue shield or UHG or Aetna? What are the downsides of accepting Medicaid in Texas, I was reading that the state will try to collect the benefit amounts paid after you die. They could put a lien on the house you own etc.

Should you buy Obama care? I’ve heard it’s the great medical insurance

I think obama care is what i applied for on the healthcar dot gov site. Apparently, I am eligible to purchase a health plan from that healthcare dot gov portal only after being denied Medicaid

Obamacare is flipping expensive unless you qualify for subsidy which means you earn less than about $66K for a couple. Obamacare in Virginia at my age, close to retirement, is $42,800 for two. Health insurance has tripled since the passage of the ACA. Thanks alot, Obama.

I think only certain medical offices take Medicaid but I'm not 100%. I just used to work at a physical therapy clinic and we did not take Medicaid and my manager told me that only certain places take it. So if you have certain doctors offices you like to go to you should check with them to see if they take it or not.

thanks TX republicans

Sounds like it's not only for Texas, and it only applies for cost related to long-term care / home services such as nursing homes /Not-a-lawyer

To qualify u must be really broke and generally older … like almost no assets and very little income.

Amazon MagentaCat Jan 28, 2023

It's not based on assets. And if OP is laid off, he / she has no income.

Amazon bot512 OP Jan 28, 2023

To qualify your monthly income should be below $2450. Must be either 65 years old or be under 65 and have children who are under 18 years old. Looks like assets are not counted

I am trying to decide of I should continue my current health insurance via Cobra by paying $2000 per month, or accept free health insurance from Medicaid, or try the obamacare which is not free but will be lesser than $2000 per month. Hoping someone here have crossed this bridge before. Please DM me if you have

Do you want to maintain continuity of care? Keep the same PCP etc.? Do cobra. Since this is a qualifying event, you may be eligible to change your plan, opt for a less expensive one, with higher deductibles, copays, etc which will lower your monthly premium. Call the cobra provider they gave you and ask them if there is a cheaper plan you can get on. If you don’t do cobra, you may have to change doctors, networks, etc. When you were employed, did you select the cheapest plan your employer offered or the most expensive one in terms of monthly paycheck deductions? Basically they will allow you to redo your open enrollment and pick the cheapest plan. All cobra means is you pay fully for the plan, but I suspect the employer’s insurer coverage is better since you will still benefit from group discounts, etc.
