I passed the HR screen for a director level interview at an established company. I have a lot of the unique experience they are looking for but feel as though I have no business even being considered for this role. I’m essentially skipping forward 2 or 3 career steps. I believe I could do the job but it’s a stretch for sure. I’d be reporting to a VP. What kind of advice do you have? I have a 1x1 with the VP next week.
Be competent. Believe that you are the Shit 💪
Bro, I am the shit.
That’s all you need. Now, go kill it
IC or mgmt? DM me for advice, I did the same.

"If someone offers you an amazing opportunity but you're not sure you can do it, say yes - then learn how to do it later" Sir Richard Branson
To be clear. I can do it. I’m looking for advice on how to land it.
The way your formulated the question made it sound like you're scared of taking the opportunity because you don't know what's going to happen afterwards hence the quote
What company? Directors at a lot of companies are like L5/L6 equivalent in ability and TC.
I can’t say.
You really can. If it’s a company we’ve heard of they have many open positions.
Love your people. Nurture them. Support them. Don’t be reactive. Think deep. Splurge on your group. Make them see that you care for them. Earn their respect. Earn their trust. Listen. Make one on ones, never waiver. Be consistent. Go to battle. Fight. Nurture. Mentor. Teach. Provide direction. Provide a vision. Have a mission. Influence. Influence the road map. Contribute where needed, stay hands off and get your managers to be hands on. Articulate and craft stories to the VP and CEO. Listen. Listen. Hear. Listen.
Wow. That is so well put. Can I ask what your role is?
Director.
It depends on company and ladder. In some “established” companies director == first line manager or PM with no reports. In others director may have 100+ reports.
I expect to have between 50-100 people in my .org.
In the words of my favorite movie: "managing 3 people is difficult, after that the number does not matter".
I can help you with a mock interview for director role if you are interested
I might take you up on that. Thank you.
Sure anytime happy to help
Please don’t tell me it’s Netflix

Question about women in their 30’s?
IMO if you have to ask, then you're not ready.
Agree. But it’s happening.
Agree.. but also understand title inflation is common.. "director" is often more of a senior IC than an actual people-leading / managerial Director... go in guns blazing and see what happens. If you truly feel that way then you have nothing to lose...
