Hi, I could use some advice. I currently work for GE making targeted total compensation of $57k. 1 year experience, 2021 grad. Midwest and currently remote. I am in sales and I easily clear $50k a day in revenue! No commission… I had a meeting with my boss and she said she does not talk career growth until 2 years in a role. I work incredibly hard and it is discouraging that no matter how hard I work, I stay in the same place both career wise and financially. I have had a rough year in my personal life and I thought a few weeks off (unpaid) would benefit my mental health. I ran this by my boss and the idea was dismissed. I had a 4.0 GPA from a top ranking university and I feel I am stuck. Would it be silly to quit, take some time off, then look for a new, higher paying, job? All advice is welcome, I just want to find a happier place :) thank you.
You need to immediately update your resume and start applying for remote SDR/BDR roles. You’re making a massive mistake if you don’t.
I think you’re right. I guess I should take my experience and find better
Yo, I work in Aerospace but I’m on the tech side in DISE. If your manager wants you to put in another year, it could be they know something you don’t. For instance, sounds like you’re crushing it. And you want to grow faster. However, with 1 year in, there’s also a lot you don’t know yet and will be held accountable for when you get moved into a larger scoped role & u may struggle (I’ve seen that happen twice - and they were let go for performance compared to their more experienced peers at that level) Another example, my team doesn’t have opportunities for junior level roles, all of us are experienced 10+ yrs. So I’ve heard many junior tech workers discuss career advancement expectations with us and when I do mock interviews to see where they’re at, there’s a lot they don’t know that they should - I give them all the Tea, and say when u do an interview for the next role - be ready and good luck I don’t think your manager is toxic , I believe everyone defaults to that excuse when they don’t get what they want when they want, it’s almost like a sense of entitlement (More so now bc every recent college grad thinks they all should be making six figures right out of college just bc they heard Google made 3 offers to 3 people - when most of the TC is stocks not fixed income) Here’s my advice as I’ve been in your shoes before Don’t be afraid to make lateral moves in your career to build a solid and broad foundation of knowledge and experience so when you ask about career advancement you can back it up with a ton of examples, and 2, when u do get into a more senior or larger scoped role you will be competitive and successful Also, if you want to take some risks, apply to other companies discretely, see if you can land a better offer that’s closer or exactly what you want, then once u verbally except that offer, wait for the written acceptance letter that you will need to sign, get the letter, sign it, Bring up the conversation about career advancement again with ur manager, if you hear the same thing, thank the manager for their time. Inform your manager that you have accepted an offer at another company and will be leaving I use that specific example bc thats what I’ve done in the past in FAANG I once had a manager tell me I wasn’t a good fit due to lack of experience But got an offer for a similar role that was more senior or had a larger scope on a different team (in the same company vs a different company). Months later, my name is all over communication channels and the old manager saw that another manager recognized my potential. The old manager was on a call that I organized that dealt with their software product. Needless to say, it felt so good to be in a position that required that manager to submit a request for support to my team that I managed. The tables had turned So you have 3 options 1- stay another year, rengage 2-move laterally in the company 3-leave the company after securing an offer

Hey, sounds like you are burnt out and your management is toxic. Sorry to hear that. I think you need to take a break and reconsider what to do.
I think you are 100% correct in saying I am burnt out.
