I've just been approved by the hiring committee at Google for a Level 5 SWE position in Seattle. While they get team matching started, my recruiter is also asking for my expected annual TC and I'd love some advice on that from the community! I have 9 YOE at NASA and I'm in a lead role on my project. Surprise, surprise, the public sector pay doesn't really compare to Google salaries, so going off of my current TC isn't helpful. No competing offers either - I wasn't actually seeking another job, but they drew me in with Google Foobar. What do ya'll think I should ask for??
It’s accurate but you can get higher with competing offers
Definitely ask for more than you expect to get in any case
Congratulations! But, PLEASE, do not be the one giving the initial numbers. Please don’t do that. Just say something political like “I know every opportunity can be different, so it wouldn’t be too precise to give some expected numbers on behalf of Google.” Have the recruiter give you the first numbers and move up from there.
What is the point in not giving the first numbers. Any company would not give you an outstanding initial offer (unless you speak about other offers in hand). They are going to low ball you anyways to start with. My personal opinion is just go with a higher number than having an no initial number awkwardness. If it was Bay Area I would say “I would feel comfortable to make the move if the offer was 500+” In Bay Area the TC for l5 ranges from 350+
That’s a good question - it always worked super well in my favor, even when I did not have competing offers. This is a “game” and I’ve seen it work well for myself

levels.fyi is a good resource if you haven't checked it out already. Good luck :)
I have definitely checked that out! I wasn't sure how exactly accurate it was considering the small/voluntary sample size. And thank you! :)
The medians are good.
