Context: Relatively young (in early 30s), have kids, Bay area, got promoted relatively fast within Google from L3 to L6 (~5ys). Like my team, work and scope, see opportunities to myself getting to 7 maybe in the next couple of years. Wanted to ask advice from the blind community and specially from folks with longer careers. The general advice on blind seems to be to try to get external offers to go up in TC but so far staying put and focused within my team/orgs seemed to have played out well enough or maybe better because I ended up accumulating knowledge about the team and performing at least cme or ee at L6 hasn't been too difficult. So as you go up on levels, 1) Does the switching job advice still hold true? 2) Have you switched purely because of higher TC? And have you regretted thinking what if I had stayed? 3) Should you even consider interviewing for other jobs if you are still growing well in the team/company? TC 540k YOE 7 all at Google
That's a fantastic TC. Could you share what location this is and a breakdown?
Stay
Stay. I think there is a curve when it comes to upping your TC where Job hopping helped. You've very quickly gotten to 540k probably because you're very smart and capable and worried more about performing than job hopping and TC. I think from 200k to 500k, you get benefits from job hopping. You can get there faster (no quicker than you though I imagibe). But after that it's not raw skills that pay more. Now you have to have institutional knowledge to make more of an impact. You've got that going for yourself. So id stay! Plus you have a family now, you're makimg boat loads of money. I wouldn't rock the boat. If jump ship if I was in the 200k range after 7 years and needing to increae my TC quickly. You're not in that position.
Thank you for the kind words and really detailed answer!
L3 to L6 in 5 years is not "relatively" fast, it's 🚀
:) there are folks who did even faster thought, I had a peer in my org that got it in 3.5 years, but I think his case was a misleveling at L3 (he got a double promo from L3 to L5 in 1.5y).
Good trajectory. If I were you, I would just rest and vest
Thanks everyone for the replies!
Personally I would stay at Google if I see growth. Beginning from scratch in another company will bring a lot of stress (new dev stack, new product, new people, new processes). If you want more TC, get competing offers and try and get counter offers. If you are L6, your chances should be pretty good.
