Advice/Referrals Needed - Attempt to transfer internally to Data Analyst role.

Hey community, I have had a weird week. I recently applied for an internal Data job at my company and have been told I got it. This should be great news! However, some of the details around it have changed dramatically. Here is the timeline of information: - I saw the job in an internal board and discussed it with my manager and poster - I was getting promoted in my role to AVP with a “game-changing” raise. I had hinted prior I had gotten verbal offers for $150k for UW jobs at other firms. This was to be processed in March. - I discussed with my manager interest in this role. I asked at this time if this changed any promotion in the works and was told no. I also said that I would help through our busy period til 7/1 if the new department allowed given the promotion coming. - I talked to the new department and they advised they had talked to my department. They knew there were coming changes and they were comfortable with this. I proceeded on to internal interviews and was told they would discuss with my department on a timeline. I passed a SQL technical interview. - I came back from scheduled PTO to discussions with my current department. I had been advised my promotion is off the table and that these things are not “guaranteed “ since I am now leaving the department. - I asked my new department and they advised that my compensation was on the high end and they could absorb it at no increase of my current rate - I discussed with my current manager and he flipped the conversation on me saying things like: “well you didn’t want this role so why would a promotion matter?” I pushed that this action was punitive and I had earned this from my work in the last year. He also made a comment that it was “unrealistic” to thing a desk job should make a sales jobs money. Now comments have been said to me such as “why are you so engaged, you are on your way out?” - I discussed with HR today and they said my department put in for a 2.8% raise in March. That is not game changing money. I have been doing a data bootcamp through Rice the last few months prepping to transition to data. I have been anxious on what to expect comp-wise given my career change. Am I ridiculous to be upset with this? Should I start looking for other opportunities? Advice, referrals appreciated. 10 YOE in insurance; TC: $120k Actuarial Science Degree (0 exams) MBA in Finance Risk Analytics Certificate Data Analytics and Viz Bootcamp done in April. If your unhappy with your current situation then always search elsewhere. I think your boss/employer did a reasonable thing but handled it poorly. It’s not unreasonable that you don’t get to keep your promotion/pay when you change teams/roles. They are completely different roles and under different budgets/teams. If you changed from AVP sales to AVP analytics then that’s a different story but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Based on what you’ve shared if actually reads that you took a demotion to do something you want to do.

I appreciate the feedback. I think the issue I have is this promotion has been in the works for about a year. I also was told prior to interviewing this was a non-issue. I am concerned that my new role is capped, while also not aware of whether my current comp is a reasonable expectation for a data role.

I can’t speak for your environment but in normal corporate structure pay/promotion is dependent on role in company.Your expectation is to keep the same pay for a different role which is pretty uncommon in my experience. It’s as if a staff software engineer that makes 500k wanted to change roles to recruiting and expects 600k compensation because they were just promoted to principle engineer but wants to become a senior recruiter. It just doesn’t work that way
