What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Hello, I started my MS in Data science last year and have almost completed my first 3 courses and another 7 to go. I have worked most of my career as a data engineer and now working as Solution Architect for the last 2-3 years, also in the transition path to become a Solutions Manager, more of a techno functional role. I have some mixed thoughts at this stage if doing a Masters in Data Science would be the right choice for me? One of the reasons is that I doubt if I'll be getting or indeed wanting to do developer work anymore as I'm interested in an Engineering Manager ladder now. Can anyone please share advice on what you think or if you have gone through this kind of dilemma? What benefits did you find after doing a masters late in your career? It takes serious efforts to do MS along with my job, so wanted to have opinion to ensure I put my energy at right place. Please advise. 17+yoe/ 325K
Unless you are pivoting, no need for a graduate degree at this moment in your career. However, do continue if you are enjoying and learning new things. Being a lead/manager is not so much based on degrees that’s days but more being a ale to Manage up and down-rather an art than a science
I would be selective on what I spend my time on. With 17yoe and a data science degree, I would really take a hard look at what the roi would be. Since you are up for a manager role, a career in management sounds like the. Next step. If yes, I would work as a manager for a few years and then climb up the executive ladder. If at all need be, do a company sponsored mba but I don’t see a need for that too.
Why did you decide to take the MS in the first place, if you wanted to be a manager? Anyway, learning new thing is never wrong, so you're not wasting your time.
There was nothing much new to learn for me and I felt stagnant... I would say that I love data and analytics and felt an MS would be a good value to add on using the perks (almost free company money)... Now I feel that next steps sooner or later would be project and people management so revisiting my plans
Sir, just for curious. If you are work in MS for 17 years, can you achieve financial free..?
TC is at $325K…..definitely not enough to achieve financial freedom if you got family and trying to maintain a decent life style…mortgage, property tax, car note, expenses for kid’s activities
Didn't get your question exactly
