Started at Bloomberg London a few months back as a new grad. Was initially assigned a heavy C++ team until the new grad training. However, I have 0 experience with C++. After the training I decided to stay in the same group. Now, I have been assigned several tasks with C++ and so far I have totally bombed them. I just don't get C++. And it is making me look awful as an engineer. My manager suggested that it is not worth it to work on these tasks anymore and suggested me to look for other tasks with JavaScript. I feel terrible. Impostor syndrome is real. I feel like I am going to get fired real soon. Can anyone relate? Any suggestions? Am I screwed? TC: £80k YoE: 0
If you can code in JavaScript then what’s so alien about C++ ?
Pointers, references, namespaces, templates, member initializator list, memory management, syntax etc.
Those things aren’t trivial but if you learned to code I feel like you can definitely still learn that stuff
Look for other tasks with JavaScript. Sounds like they fucked up and put you in the wrong group. Own what you know and what you don’t
Star learning C++ my friend. Sign up for lessons from an actual person, even though it’s expensive it’s the way to go. There are hundreds of online resources : YouTube, freecodecamp, LinkedIn learning, chatGPT, https://en.cppreference.com/w/ and https://cplusplus.com/reference/. Feel free to DM me, I will see what I can do to help you. Goodluck!
Do you have a cs degree?
Yea I have a BSc in cs
If I were you I’d spend my working hours learning C++ Make a side project in C++ to learn the basics Continually ask ChatGPT about concepts you don’t understand Ask chatGPT to explain C++ concepts to you and relate them to your preferred programming language
What school did you go to OP? Asking because I couldn't even get an interview with bloomberg :( Also I take it you're in UK? is it that easy to get fired in UK?
Ha, are you a past version of me? I sucked balls at C++ for the first 6 months or so and then it became easier. Stick with it and do some easy leetcoding in C++
That’s fine! Everyone is going through this. If you’re ready to put in some extra hours, you will be fine.
I think you might be overwhelming yourself with the tasks and you're too afraid to fail that it stops you from dedicating some time to learn C++. If I were you and I didn't feel too overwhelmed I'd revise basics of C++ over the weekends. Probably a course or something if the company provides a learning platform. I do a lot of Java but I worked for a year on C++. It's hectic but very straightforward. Actually at some points it seemed easier to me than Java.
